Suggestion:
- He was made a POW
- In the prisoners camp, he and a local peasent manage to escape, and flee to a remote region (perhaps Hmong territory) were the peasant lives
- Were, he knows about a treasure that the enemy army was searching, and the peasants convinces Scrooge to help him to search for the treasure, also
- After they find the treasure, the reveal - the "peasant" is a long lost disappeared powerful tribal chief, and some items of the treasure are crucial to him to prove his claim; knowing that the chief was returned, the tribesmen expel the VC/North Vietnamese from their territory
- The chief gives to a fraction of the treasure to Scrooge, and, when they could contact the US Army and tell the story, Scrooge is considered a war hero and receive an honorable discharge (but with an invitation to join the Green Berets)
- If you want a bonus for the more intellectual readers, create a subplot of the US Army knowing that a American soldier in the mountains was created a kind of almost private (and successful) army of local tribesmen and sending a subaltern officer to enter in contact with him
- Flash-forward to present day: after the war, the local people escaped to the USA and Scrooged employed all of them in his companies (but it is a secret, because he don't want nobody to know that, in the deep, he is a bleeding heart)
- Or, of you want a more bleak end (perhaps in a posterior story), he had the opportunity to help them to escape, but he abandoned them to prison and execution (specially the tribal chief, who is know considered and "enemy of the people") and this is the traumatic event similar to in the ""The Empire-Builder from Calisota"
