So the Magic Kingdom book is supposed to be issue 1 of 2 ... does anyone know when issue 2 is coming out? I couldn't find it in the Previews for the subsequent months.
Last year we used to get a 3rd “1/25 retailer incentive” variant cover. I was glad when they stopped doing that this year, because they are impossible to collect without spending a ridiculous amount of money. An occasional exclusive variant like the convention variants or the upcoming “art appreciation” variant is just fun, but for me the retailer incentive variants takes away all the fun of collecting! They are just a cynical trick to get comic shops to order more copies... Sadly it looks like they are back in May, but as 1/10 copies instead of 1/25.
...
I also dislike the variant covers, although I must admit that I have many of them. As others pointed out, it is clearly a way to push sales and build hype. Didn't Star Wars premier with 60+ covers? The upcoming Betty and Veronica looks like 20+ variants.
1:10 is obviously going to be more common than 1:25. Is that an indication of IDW projecting more realistic sales numbers? IDW wasn't shipping enough variants at 1:25? Certainly my LCS never got one. I have grabbed a few variants at conventions and from online shops like Midtown Comics and Things from Another World. They generally are pretty cool covers.
I find it a little strange that the 1:10 variants are sketch covers again. I wonder why? They already did sketch covers with the first issues.
The sketch covers are for conventions. You can bring them to an artist and have them draw a personalized image on it. (In case you're ever lucky enough to attend a con that has a Disney artist as a guest.) Since most major conventions take place during the summer, that's the time of year IDW would want to be making sketch variants.
You know what I'm really happy about these recent issues? Is that the editors that started publishing Brer Rabbit stories again for Walt Disney's Comics and Stories. I'm so glad that Brer Rabbit comics are back on the American Disney comics magazines because this was one of my wishes that I wanted for IDW editors to do and I wanted to see these stories being published in english again. Finally, one of my wishes came true. I hope they will publish more Brer Rabbit stories in the future like more reprints of Sunday BR stories or other American BR stories, more Dutch and Danish stories being translated to english etc. I noticed that on Walt Disney's Comics and Stories 731, they published this BR story with the title "Petrified Perfection". Here is the preview of the first panel:
It's great to see that they still coloring Brer Rabbit and Brer Bear in their Song of the South color schemes. I think that Riley Thomson's BR looks fine in the SotS color scheme but I wonder what the Dick Moores' BR will look like in that color scheme? Speaking of the Disneyland covers, I wish they should make a cover of the Splash Mountain ride that featuring Brer Rabbit, Brer Fox and Brer Bear.

I agree that it's awesome they're coming back. Sadly, we French fans have also been deprived of "Song of the South" material since the 90's (and even then, those were mostly cameos of Brer Bear in Li'l Wolf stories).

It's great to see that you agreed with me, Scrooge MacDuck . Yes, it's so sad that there are not many new Song of the South/Brer Rabbit material but maybe except the Splash Mountain stuffs and the Dutch comic stories. Song of the South (the movie) have been only released on LaserDisc and VHS in Europe and Japan (Sadly, never in USA). It has been so many years since Disney haven't released SotS on DVD or Blu-Ray. It would be great if they re-released this movie on this year because it's also the year of Song of the South's 70th anniversary but sadly it will never happen . If they will finally released it on theaters or DVD/Blu-Ray then Brer Rabbit and other Brers would be very happy than they are now. I also would be very happy if this happens. There is an old fan-art of Brer Rabbit, Brer Fox and Brer Bear where they wanted to bring Song of the South back: . You can see Brer Fox's sign sayng: "Honk! If ya'll want our movie released! DVD/VHS". The good things are that Splash Mountain still exists and that you can still meet Brer Rabbit, Brer Fox and Brer Bear at Disneyland.
