My IDW colleagues and I have just noticed a printing error in WDCS #729, which came out today.
On Page 5 of the Frank Jonker/Freddy Milton Donald story "Which Switch is Which?" the voice balloons and captions—originally on a separate "layer" of the electronic art files—were accidentally removed, resulting in the texts being printed directly on the artwork. In two panels, some texts overlapped black surfaces, making them invisible. While one can still follow the plot, a few good lines from translator Maura McManus got lost.
As a public service to our readers, here is Page 5 as it really should look! Our later trade paperback reprint will fix the glitches.
Is this way of creating the artwork something that is special for Sanoma stories? Looking at the art for recent Egmont and Italian stories, it looks like the artists still draw the speech balloons – they are not added digitally later. That way it won't matter too much if the text layer is merged with the art or color layers.
I understand why lettering like this is done, in terms of practicality, but being honest always felt it kinda looks ugly- even in Big Two books. This is just me thinking aside, though, of course.
