Why are Parquita and Valores listed as separate from Rosinha and Rocha Vaz?
They are different characters, in the Dutch chronology, José dated Rosinha, but not for long, in fact, this also happened in the strips, when Panchito appeared, she is not seen and they fight for the señoritas.
I've seen question this come up a couple of times lately, so I contacted the magazine. The creation of Parquita and Senhor Valores is part of an effort to modernize the Joe Carioca continuity, trading his tramp-like persona for a steady girlfriend, etc. They pointed out that Rosinha and Rocha Vaz have appeared only very rarely in Dutch comics, so there was no expectation from the general audience to bring them back. Instead, the choice was made to create a new set of characters, with a visual nod to the old Carioca characters as a kind of Easter egg for fans.
what a stupid concept. If you're reinventing the character, and are going to make them look exactly like these other characters that barely exist in this setting and therefore have no baggage just make them said other characters and use them in the reinvented way you're making these new stories in

That's similar to what happened in I TL 2756-2 (and its sequel). Here, we have the Mayor's nephew, who practically is Peter Pig from The Wise Little Hen, only his name is not Peter Pig and not even Meo Porcello (his Italian name), but a brand new Pigeon Pig.
But he IS Peter (well, more or less): Donald and he were friends when they were young and he was the president of the Idle Hour Club (which, again, is not called "Club dei Fannulloni" as it usually is in Italian publications, but "Club degli Oziosi", a name that was never used before). Also, the Idle Hour Club headquarters is not a dilapidated wooden house, but a boat house, just like Donald's in the Silly Symphony. It's like the author (Riccardo Pesce) took some elements from the Classic and rearranged them in a soft-reboot-like way.
The "new" Rocha Vaz and Maria equivalents are, to my eye, more or less indistinguishable from the originals, to a point where I can't imagine calling them anything in English but their original American/Brazilian names.
When José Carioca dates a sharp, upper-class, enterprising girl with a stuffy tycoon dad, and they effectively look the same now as they did in 1943 (and 1982, and 2001), who else could they be?

... this reminds me of Fat Tony in the Simpsons being replaced by his (eventually) identical cousin Fit Fat Tony. But, ya know, without the selfawareness.

Obviously this will cause trouble if the "two different" characters end up interacting in the same story.
Ellsworth and Bruto have the same name in Norwegian ("Kra") because translators back in the day didn't realize they were supposed to be different characters, and they've avoided having to deal with that due to not having translated any stories where they appear together. But it's definitely going to be an issue when they end up having to translate such a story.

In at least German comics, I've seen Ellsworth and Ellroy translated as Maxi Smart and Maxi Smart Jr., though it's not consistent (Ellroy has also been "Bruno," from his Italian name Bruto).
Long-time Donald Duck weekblad writer and artist Wilma van den Bosch is going to get this year's Stripschapprijs, the most important Dutch comic award for her oeuvre. She worked as an employee at the Dutch weekly for about 30 years. Unfortunately very few of her stories have been published here in Germany. I think I never read anything by her. But I saw a nice original drawing for a cover in the Dutch Disney exhibition in Noordwijk in 2022.

They actually dedicated a book to Ellsworth very recently, which still didn't standardize things in the reprints - there's one story where Ellsworth is called Bruno, there's Artibani's Seventh Raven where it's the son and Ellsworth is Maxi Smart, there's another story where Ellroy is Maxi Smart and Ellsworth is "Gringo"
