All very interesting. I, for one, wouldn't rule out Wilmer's suggestions — since we've already got Robb's Clementine and Hubbard's Clementine and so on, Rosa's "only Goldie" ideal no longer holds much water unless one is working from a strictly Barks/Rosa perspective. (And even then, there is Katie Mallard whom Rosa shamefully downplayed in the Life and Times specicifically to salvage Goldie's "specialness"…) Anyone with me?
Oh, and the "inter-species" argument that Rosa puts forth contradicts his own view, stated elsewhere, that these characters are all humans!
To your second point ... again, I think it's an example of Rosa adopting a scorched earth policy to ward off further criticism of his omission of Miss Wise ... "Barks was having a bad day" and "They belong to different species" are not arguments he would otherwise make.
