There are so many Disney movies I can watch over and over... However the Disney movie I probably watch the least times (aside from things like "Chicken Little" where watching it once was enough for me) is... "Peter Pan". Heck, It's one of few Disney films I don't even own the DVD.
Well, it' years since I watch it the last time (maybe eve entire decade!), so I decided to watch it one more time and...
It’s interesting but in a sense, I don’t find anything wrong with this movie or Disney’s take on Peter pan mythos… I just didn’t found anything about it that stand-outish or memorable.
Even the design of Neverland sort of feels generic for most time. The main characters also don’t feel that interesting to me. The main characters in particular don’t feel that interesting. I guess the Darling Children are ment to be play as a contrast to imaginative world Neverland but Wendy at best just come of as annoying (maybe it’s do to same voice actress, but she just feels like lesser Alice from Disney “Alice in Wonderland”) John has one or two funny moments of how strict he acts, but aside from that… not much to them.
Peter Pan is only slightly better. I like how they play him up as mysterious and covered in darkness when he appears for the first time (a nice enigmatic way to introduce the character) and I like the animation on him when he’s fling. They sort of made it effortless, almost like swimming. But mostly he’s just cocky and it borders into annoying territory and the way he boss around people like he’s the president of Neverland or something… Not exactly something that makes me root for the character.
The lost boys just feels meh and Mr. Darling comes of as to unlikable to me in how frustrated he is all the time. There is something about his voice when he’s angry I just hate.
What many people love the most is Captain Hook and I find him... just ok. He works fine and there are some funny moments with how neurotic he is and I like the scene when he’s manipulating Tinker Bell… I just woudn’t put him among top Disney villains. I wish they would make him darker. He’s ok as a comic bad guy but never feels like a true treat to be honest and aside from Mr. Smee his crew feels very generic as far the designs.
ALSO I'm not that big of Peter Pan purist but one change from the original story I simply hate is replacing the poison with a bomb. It guess it's visually more interesting but it's just felt... lame. And the removing the entire "I don't believe in fairies" part just felt like leaving out one of most iconic moments. They still could have it, only have one of the Darling children to say it. Overall that entire sequence just felt rushed...
The animation is also pretty standard. Nothing bad, nothing impressive. There is something about the way the colors look in this movie that feels tad monotonic. Maybe to much blue, I don't know... then again there is even more blue all the time in "Cinderella" and there it's work just fine.
Finally – this has to be the only Disney movie I don’t remember a single song – with one exception but I’ll name it below. Even the music when Peter plays his flute feels like re-used soundtrack from later Pluto shorts.
Well, Ok so what I did like :
- Tinker Bell. Re-watching the movie realize she is not as much I remembered (seeing what Disney mascot she became you would assume she takes 75% of the screen time) and she actually vanishes for good chunck of the story, but all here moments are pretty fun, both funny and cute and despite my dislike for the replacing bomb with poison part, I do like her rushing to save Peter… Suspecefull.
- Mr. Smee is also pretty lovable in how bumbling he is and I like how he quintile is trying to talk-out Hook from his Peter Pan obsession.
- I like the scene when Wendy meets the Mirmaids and they turn out to be total jerks to her - I love the "We where only trying to drawn her" line.
- "What makes the red man red"... which I 100% get It's consider now culturaly insensetive on few levels, but at the same time... Yhe, it is one song that’s actually catchy and energetic and memorable.
- Speaking of the Indians, I did found it funny how comically serious Tiger Lilly is when Hook has her hostage.
- I like the fact that when The Darling children meets Peter for the first time they aren’t shock that much just happy he is the way they expected.
Well, ttat’s about all I have to say about this movie… Probably my least favorite of movies made while Walt Disney was still alive. I totally get why people like it, just didn’t grab me when I was a kid and isn’t doing that much for me now…
But what do you think?
