Aw, hell, KKM…
…Ya sucked me back in again for (Ahem!) "a few more words".
Obviously, we differ somewhat in our views – and that’s what makes the world (literally as this seems to have become a Europe vs. USA thing – the “Real World” in microcosm, if you will) go ‘round!
As you are equally entitled to your opinions as I am to mine, I will just let most everything stand on its own merit and let readers decide.
For all of your comments, you fail to address what I regarded as my two most important points… The first one being, what have *I*, or anyone else hired to do “Translation and Dialogue” work, taken away from you? How, exactly, have we hurt you? It’s not what we wish to do, by any stretch!
That sort of outsized outrage is what I primarily object to, if you strip away all the extraneous material.
If you felt that the “Walkie-Talkie version” of that story, without the unsavory addition of “Captain Retro Duck”, was the equal of Barks’ “Only a Poor Old Man” and “Back to the Klondike” combined… Well you STILL have it! In fact, every country in which that story has appeared STILL HAS IT – save the USA, whose readers expressed satisfaction with the version they received!
The only place in which this aberration occurs is in IDW’s UNCLE SCROOGE # 3 (2015)! Nowhere else!
As you say above: “Otherwise, you’re free to leave a fan space if you don’t want to partake in it” – so are you just as free to never read that particular version of the story! Or burn your copy in disgust, once you HAVE read it! It’s out there for better or for worse – and can be easily ignored by those who so desire, without so much accompanying vitriol! …It can also be reasonably criticized, without making it your “rallying cry”!
Also, being a “Moderator” of the volatile types that gather here, I would expect that a moderator would not presume intent on the part of another!
And, when you say “…things like ‘Captain Retro-Duck’, which is also just as condescending of children (kids can't know what a walkie-talkie is!!)”, you are doing exactly that! When it comes to my work, being “condescending of children” is as far from my intent as can be!
You may find this to be unusual, but the thing I admire most about Carl Barks – even beyond his writing and art – was his ability to send me to the dictionary, with the use of occasional unfamiliar words! I try to do that in my work, thereby increasing children’s’ word-power (as Barks had increased mine) and showing them a respect not found in much of their popular media.
NEVER did I feel that “(kids can't know what a walkie-talkie is!!)”! Whenever I’ve discussed this story, I very specifically stated that walkie-talkies are now *irrelevant* and that obsessive fannish behavior is far more universal – especially to the audience for which I write! …I’m at a loss to understand how you can so easily declare something different!
And, like it or not, you must admit that what I did was perfectly in character for the comic book Donald Duck… and very deftly fit in with – and never contradicted – the existing art! Appreciate the skill, if not the result!
Also (once again), it was VERY early on in the process. No actual rules had been established or communicated to me. There were no editorial meetings to attend, or conference calls to join! It’s just me, sitting isolated in my suburban New York home, with an assigned scripting assignment. All I had to go on was the policy in effect at my last such practice at Boom! And so, logically, I did! So, can we at least stop harping on “Captain Retro Duck”? He’s become enough of a legend already!
The second major point that you overlook in your comments is the fact is that at least one person here (I know who, but will not dignify him with a mention of his cyber-pseudonym) actually called for my job!
Is that something that a moderator should have allowed? Love my stuff, or hate my stuff… but you can’t love or hate ME… You don’t know me!
You mention my comments on Kay Wright on my Blog! Oh, sure… I’ve made “Bird Bothered Hero” as great a “legend” on my Blog, as you have made “Captain Retro Duck” on your fan forum.
But, there is one key difference… If you really have read those comments carefully, they are not about Kay Wright… but mostly about one particularly bad story that he drew! I never presume intent on his part and, had I had such a “voice” back in the day, I would NEVER have called for his job!
Maybe I’d say that he should “try harder”, “improve his figure work”, or something, but NEVER anything as personal as suggesting that he loose a source of income!
Do you see the difference? Because if not, there’s no hope for any meaningful dialogue in the future.
I am not a fan of Kay Wright, or Bob Gregory (art wise), or Joe Messerli, or several other “70s and ‘80s American artists! I make that quite clear. But, but I would never publicly call for something that could harm them! They are (or were) human beings, with loved ones, obligations, and everything else that comes with life!
So, perhaps you can understand the animosity I bear toward someone who, by calling for my job, looks to do me harm… rather than just say I “turned in a bad story”! …And why I question the moderator for letting such an irresponsibly malicious comment stand!
You say “I’m sorry, the world’s changing”. Well, it’s up to BOTH OF US – as Bloggers and Moderators – to keep it from changing for the worse.
You’ve always been welcome at my Blog, as would anyone here (especially you, Spectrus – we’re fine as far as I’m concerned), but we’ve played this matter out completely by now, haven’t we?
Thad and GeoX can address their own issues. I only speak for myself, and in so doing, I wish you… Peace, love, understanding, and good comics for all!
