Even in Italian it is so in the original story they call him Paperone of the Tic and Paperone of the Tac, Martina played a lot on the name Paperone, not for nothing chose to translate the name Scrooge into Italian with the name of a famous and generous black friar as well as bishop.
WHAT?? He was named after this bishop, Paperone de Paperoni, this whole time??
It is not confirmed that he was named after him. Neither Martina nor his editor Gentilini ever spoke about it. That bishop is an obscure historical figure from the 13th century, so it could be an accident.

Interesting, i never knew about this (in fact, I never even knew that Guido Martina was the person who invented Scrooge's Italian name. He must have been the Italian counterpart of Erika Fuchs, so to speak).
Personally, I always thought that Scrooge's Italian name "Paperone" was a combination of "Paper" (duck) and "Pantalone", a Scrooge-like figure from the Italian "commedia dell'arte" ( en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pantalone ). The character Pantalone's full name was "Pantalon de' Bisognosi", which mirrors the way Scrooge full name is "Paperon de' Paperoni" in the Italian comics.

No, Paperone simply means big duck. it was chosen in contraposition to Paperino, which is little duck.
For for any male noun or proper name X you can do X-one = BIG X X-ino = LITTLE X X-etto = LITTLE X X-iello = LITTLE X more friendly X-uccio = LITTLE DEAR X X-accio = UGLY BAD X
For for any female noun or proper name X you can do X-ona = BIG X X-ina = LITTLE X X-etta = LITTLE X X-iella = LITTLE X more friendly X-uccia = LITTLE DEAR X X-accia = UGLY BAD X
