Mickey and Minnie meet Mortimer at a fun park. I don't know much about that character, but, judging from the times I've seen him
at Disney stories, I think I can tell his mere existence drives Mickey crazy for some reason.
Anyway, Mortimer brags he's really funny and, surprisingly, our Gary Stu, Mickey, cannot compete with him. Later, at the same fun
park, the mouse couple meet a wizard. Mickey calls him a fraud and the wizard retaliates with a spell that he declares will make Mickey
funny but miserable.
Personally, during the whole first part of the story, I couldn't help feeling sorry for the goldfish in the bowl Mickey was holding. Poor
creature, spending all its life in a prison. If you have fish, go to the ocean and release them, now! Also, if you have birds, open their
cages and release them, now! I'm serious!
Mickey soon discovers that the wizard's spell works and gets excited, impressing everyone with his new sense of humor. Personally,
I didn't find any of his jokes funny. Maybe it was just the translation, though I have a feeling those jokes weren't funny to begin with.
Nevertheless, the people in the story find them hilarious. Also, during that part, I was like 'Hey, didn't the wizard say that Mickey's
new skill shall make him miserable? Why doesn't our Gary Stu seem to worry about that? PIS (Plot Induced stupidity), I guess, sigh...'
Mortimer is jealous that Mickey is stealing the spotlight.
At some point, Goofy (who is unusually smart in this story) asks him: 'Do you really want to have the kind of friends Mortimer has?'
It is not long before Mickey finds out what Goofy's words mean, the hard way. Due to the spell, he keeps telling jokes, even when
he really mustn't. As a result, all worthwhile people in his life renounce him, one after the other.
Mickey returns to the wizard's tent, apologizes and pleads him to rid him of the curse. The wizard says the curse will wear off tonight
at 10 pm anyway.
Meanwhile, Minnie, not knowing any of the above, enrolls Mickey into a humor competition. Now that Mickey knows the spell will wear off,
he decides to relax, enjoy it while it lasts and, why not, win the contest as well.
Predictably, the final is Mortimer vs Mickey. Mortimer, who overheard Mickey talking about his new skills being a result of magic, intentionally
stalls in the semi finals so that the magic will have worn off by the final. On top of that, at the final match, he tells a joke which is
supposed to be golden (still not funny to me). Mickey seems doomed.
Our hero gives up and, instead of telling a joke, he confesses that he's not really funny and he reached the final thanks to a spell.
Then he asks the audience to acccept him for who he is. Suddenly, he has an idea. He finishes his speech with this sentence: 'Said
the spaghetti before being covered by meatballs' (or something along these lines). This causes the audience to burst into laughter
and Mickey wins. Dunno, people. Is the thought of spaghetti saying: 'I'm not funny but I want you to accept me for who I am' that
funny? Am I missing something here?
Mickey receives the trophy, but he gives it to Mortimer, because he thinks he is the true winner. (Then why did you bother winning,
Mickey?)
Despite its bad jokes and logical inconsistencies, this story has something which I can't define and makes it enjoyable. If you read it
once per few months, that is!
