Prompted by recent posts on whether COVID-19 or the ongoing race riots could take place in Duckburg or Mouseton, I've decided to create an all-purpose thread on realism and Disney comics.
I was going to ignore this, but having seen Disney themselves have spoken out about the current situation, I feel it's time for some real talk.
This is a VERY difficult question. Disney comics riff on real life to be sure, but they're frozen in a Silver Age level of realism. I mean, has racism ever been addressed in the comics?
To take up the illusion with a heavy heart... I honestly can't imagine race riots in Duckburg. Not just because it's the whitest place ever, but because there are certain conventions about that can and can't happen in Disney comics, and this has well and truly crossed it. On the other hand, ignoring it in the context of imagining a DCU (Disney Comics Universe) seems grossly insensitive at best.
I've thought about this question for a long time, because I like to come up with for slightly grittier, more realistic DCU stories (my own offshoot series), and I've never been able to resolve it.
We've never had an Alan Moore figure injecting a dose of realism into the comics. Sure, Don Rosa made some headway into exploring Scrooge's psyche, but his MAD/EC type of lens strikes is more juvenile than adult. We've never seen truly seen adult Disney comics because... what the heck does adult Disney look like? Howard the Duck? Maus? F*rries? No, ma'am! Thank you very much!
Do you ones think Duckburg and Mouseton could be affected by the current race riots? E.g. protestors torching Chief O'Hara's office or looting the Money Bin?
