One of the most iconic stories of my childhood.
It begins with what could be the beginning of another short, comedic story focused on Donald's misery: one misfortune after the other.
Unbeknownst to our beloved, relatable, feathery hero, some weirdo has been spying on him. And, by some weirdo, I mean a famous director! He wants Donald to star in his next tv series (why does such stuff never happen to me?)
At first, Donald thinks that he will have a cool role, such as an astronaut or a secret agent or something. But no! The director wants him to play himself.
Why not? I mean, who wouldn't want to watch the misfortunes of someone like Donald Duck? In our universe, everyone loves it. However, Scrooge McDuck (who, as it turns out, is the boss of the aforementioned director), knows little about our universe. Believing that show is gonna be a flop, he banishes his former employee through the well known gag trap hole in the floor.
Rockerduck, who is conveniently standing outside the money bin, sees him and hires him immediately. Being more open minded than his rival, he gives that show a chance.
After a few weeks during which the new show is about as successful as my novels on Amazon, the ratings skyrocket. Rockerduck couldn't be happier, whereas Scrooge couldn't be more miserable.
Soon, though, both tycoons have problems. The tv show starts affecting the Duckburg citizens in a manner not so desirable for their employers. By the way, how come this happens only to Duckburg? Isn't that show broadcast anywhere else in the world? Is that channel called Duckburgflix or something? (I know, horrendous pun, shame on me, yada yada...)
Facing a common crisis, Scrooge and Rockerduck temporarily ally with each other. To fix the problem, they let Donald direct the show as well, knowing full well that he will 'find a way' to ruin everything.
And indeed, when Donald decides to change his character in the show into a successful businessman, the Duckburg citizens feel betrayed.
After having his butt delivered to him by his former fans, Donald ends up in the same old misery, working for his uncle and doing chores anything but enviable.
Despite its dark ending, I think this story emits an aura of innocence and hope. It makes me happy at my darkest times of desperation. I mean, so what if I never become successful? So what if I never get a job and wind up a homeless person sleeping next to his very own poo? Big deal! As Donald in the show (as well as in his life), all I need to be happy is a walk in the sunshine.
Rating: 9/10
