...and another update: Now I'm beginning to wonder if the version with the alternate cover is actually a GERMAN edition. Why? I just now came across it listed on this German Asterix fan page, which has not only the front cover but an alternate back cover as well!
Mort and Phil are well-known in Germany, so it makes sense in that regard. There are also some more French-Belgian characters on the back cover, like Yakari.
Your point about Mort & Phil makes sense - I figured that it most likely wasn't from either of the ones I suggested, the style reminds me a lot of stuff like the Bash Street Kids for some reason!
It's interesting to think that there are different covers based on location - I wonder if there are even more alternate covers, and these two just happen to be the most well known?
Given this whole brouhaha around Brexit, I'm probably going to hold off on ordering anything for a while... though, the last time I said that, I ended up ordering more anyway. And then ordering more from Italy.
Still, I'm increasingly tempted to try and find a copy of this.
As you said, the selection is impressive - just about everyone is there!
The Basil comic in particular is what's starting to sway me - The Great Mouse Detective is one of my favourite Disney movies!
Not to mention the wide variety, and seemingly a surprisingly diverse selection from what's popular in different countries.
