When it comes to these characters, everyone has their own interpretations; between a wide variety of authors with their own unique versions of the characters (Taliaferro, Barks, Gottfredson, Rosa, Scarpa etc) and specific series that put a different spin on them (DoubleDuck, Duck Avenger, Wizards of Mickey etc), one's own headcanon usually involves a lot of picking and choosing.
Some will avoid certain authors because they interpret certain characters in a way that doesn't line up with what they view the character to be. Likewise, some will discount certain ideas (Young Donald Duck being an easy example) because of its tonal differences or contradictions to canon established by other authors.
Then, of course, there are interpretations of the characters that are made to appeal to different audiences.
You have games that try something different with the characters (Quackshot, Maui Mallard, Epic Mickey) and, of course, you have the bizarre world of Kingdom Hearts.
You have TV shows that portray the characters in certain ways or situations (House of Mouse, Mickey and the Roadster Racers, Goof Troop) and the ever-divisive Ducktales.
The characters have been around for decades - it's no surprise that people have differing interpretations as to who the characters are.
As has been discussed on this forum, however, that can cause difficulty in discussions - mainly because people can be misinformed about versions of the characters that they're not as familiar with.
The easiest example to go with is "Der Fuehrer's Face" - a short which people have joked about endlessly because it features Donald Duck as a member of a certain group. Of course, anyone who has actually watched the short would be aware that it was all a horrifying nightmare for Donald, and that he wasn't actually affiliated with that group.
Another, that was prevalent in the early days of the first season of Ducktales '17 was that Gyro's coldness and bad attitude were actually 'faithful to the comics', often citing Barks or PKNA but not offering an actual specific link.
So, the general idea with this thread is to discuss ideas around characters that you're not fond of.
Perhaps there's a specific author whose work or versions of certain characters rubs you up the wrong way?
Or perhaps a common notion or misconception around certain characters that are either outright false or ones that you just generally disagree with?
I've noticed that I'm not the only one around here who tends to get frustrated by the fact that some people push certain versions of the characters around without context or understanding. Not to mention the fact that, seeing as comics like these tend to be fairly niche, the voices of people who read the comics tend to be drowned out a lot.
As such, I thought it'd be fun to have a little vent thread for it!
(Note to Admins: Hoping that this thread abides by the rules, as I don't intend any disrespect towards anyone or their opinions. I understand, of course, if it's skirting a little too close to the line)
