He is a first cousin through his father Eider Duck and a distant cousin through her mother Lulubelle Loon, who i believe is related to the clan McDuck. Douglas, being Lulubelle's cousin, would also be Whitewater's distant uncle. This is a conciliation between Barks' and Rosa's statements, while also adding Douglas to the mix. 

I would have no problem in moving Whitewater from Eider's family to place him solely on the McDuck branch like LP did, but Rosa's tree has been acknowledged by so many official sources (Ducktales, Legend of the three Caballeros, The Little Big Book of Disney) that i think that trying to change it is kind of a lost battle

Also...Don Rosa's tree appears in a story (The Duck who never was) so it's a comic fact, not only something from an outside material. And Whitewater and Fethry are clearly Eider's sons here

Peculiar how Gus and Scrooge got switched in the translation!

Anyway, it's probably been discussed elsewhere, but Gus being Grandma's great-nephew doesn't bug you? I mean, in the first strip Gus appears, his mother signs herself "aunt Fanny", and he IS Don's cousin. I guess, if we should take into account the relationship suggested by Rosa, Fanny would hardly consider herself as Donald's aunt. Or maybe that is just me, and we want to deny everything Taliaferro did in terms of genealogy (see: COUSIN Della).

Not at all. I grew up considering most of my mother's cousins my uncles and aunts and they consider me as their nephew, so Fanny being called Donald's aunt just feels natural for me

A few of my mother's cousins are closer to my age, so i call them cousins, but they are a small minority. that's why Cuthbert being Fanny's brother doesn't bother me either. He does seems to be a lot younger than his sister, i would guess he's just about 10 years older than Donald

In the context of Barks' Whitewater story, Donald is "driving hither and thither tracing the limbs of the Duck family tree". Whitewater is a specifically identified as a "distant cousin". Since Donald is deeply familiar with his own family tree in this story, it wouldn't make sense to call Whitewater a distant cousin if he was also a first cousin.

Two things about The Duck Who Never Was:
1) It takes place in an alternate reality where Donald does not exist. Any deviation from to established facts in the regular universe would be due to Donald's non-existence. While it doesn't fully make sense, this could explain why some factors on the family tree are different in this reality.
2) Neither Fethry, Whitewater, nor Lulubelle are named in the tree. All we know is that a person (presumably Eider Duck) had two offspring with another person. But that's where the comic facts end.

That's a possible explanation, it kind of makes sense too...have you thought about adding a couple of Duck relatives as Whitewater's brothers there? There are two cousins who Donald, Scrooge and HDL were unaware of, so maybe they could all be part of the same branch?

The cousins in question are Dudly D. Duck and Dietbald Duck (who also happens to be a lumberjack related to Scrooge)

And cousin Nancy Duck would be a good addition to the loony Duck branch you made for Fethry. That's my favorite part of your tree. Perhaps Dimwitty Duck could be part of it too? I'm not really a fan of Dimwitty but having him on the tree is better than making him part of yet another unrelated Duck family

Funny how some of these names (if not all) have been used later for actual relatives (and therefore are already on the tree probably, unless we consider these as three complete families). All the relatives' names start with a letter D.

Hi. It's summer and I have some extra time over. This resulted in diving deeper into Duck-comics, which in turn resulted in the following posts about Scrooge’s cousin Douglas, Scrooge’s grandfathers and great-grandfathers. These all turned out way longer than I intended.

Disclaimer or whatever: I am aware that people can inherit their surname from their mother (I myself have my mother’s surname rather than my father’s). However, for the purpose of this family tree and the following posts, I’ll be assuming that surnames travel via the father in the Duck-world.


Scrooge’s Cousin Douglas

Whitewater Duck is supposed to be Donald’s distant cousin, so therefore I disregard Don Rosa’s placement as Donald’s first cousin. Smarter than the Toughies instead suggests that Whitewater is the nephew of Scrooge’s cousin who is known as Douglas McDuck in American comics. In other words, Whitewater would be related to Donald through the McDuck-side of the family. As this has potential to fit better with Barks’ original intention, I prefer this approach. Although this thread is about a family tree where anything goes, I still would prefer if it was built on the foundation of a stable Barks-canon (I know that is oxymoronic, but bear with me). The question is only: How is Whitewater (and Douglas) related to Scrooge?

Scrooge refers to himself as “the last of the Clan McDuck” in The Old Castle's Secret. We see a potential origin of title in The Last of the Clan McDuck, were Fergus says that Scrooge might “make the name McDuck respectable again! He's our clan's last hope!” Scrooge being the last of the Clan is not about every other clan member being dead; it’s about him seemingly being the only one capable of making the name live on in the form of a descendant. (For the purposes of this post, we’ll have to ignore Gideon and Scrooge’s twin brother.)

The reason I bring this up is that, if Scrooge has multiple McDuck-cousins running about, why would Fergus think that Scrooge is the clan’s last hope? The only explanation I can think of (besides the fact that Don Rosa considers all of the McDuck cousins non-canonical) is that Fergus is unaware of their existence. For this to be true, no McDuck could have spawned from any of Fergus’ siblings, as he would definitely be aware of it. One option is that every McDuck cousin is in fact a second-cousin (or third- or more) of Scrooge, meaning that they were descended from an uncle of Fergus.

In Heirloom Watch, Scrooge inherits a watch from his grand-uncle Quagmire McDuck. However, the fact that Scrooge is the one inheriting indicates that Quagmire does not have any living offspring. (Of course, he could simply have included Scrooge in his will even if he does have living offspring.) At any rate, I think that Fergus would likely be aware if he had living first-cousins capable of allowing the name McDuck live on, since he appears to be very invested in it doing so. The further back in the family tree you go, the harder it is to keep track. I can buy that Fergus has lost contact with his grandfather’s siblings and their offspring. McDucks descending from such siblings are completely within reason. But then I realized that this would only work if Fergus was unaware of Douglas’ existence. I managed to track down a Swedish copy of Uncle Scrooge Visits Cousin, Douglas’ first appearance. It turns out that Scrooge and Douglas were prospecting together in the Yukon. In addition, Douglas implies that he met Fergus back in 1898 in Gold Foolery. The combination of all this simply does not make sense…

However, in the Swedish version of Uncle Scrooge Visits Cousin, we get the following interaction. Here's my own English translation of the Swedish version:

Note that it is a plot point that Douglas shares his whole last name with Donald, as well as the first letter of his first name. (In the original Swedish, Donald is named “Kalle Anka” and Douglas is named “Konrad Anka”). Although Douglas is called “Douglas McDuck” in later English language stories, here he would have to be “Douglas Duck”. If we assume that “Duck” is Douglas’ true last name, the problem is solved: Fergus would be aware of Douglas' existence, but would not consider him to be a McDuck. Furthermore, it means that Whitewater Duck is the son of Douglas’ brother, rather than his sister, as Whitewater and Douglas are both named “Duck”.

So, with this new information, where does Douglas Duck fit into the tree? I think the best option would be if Douglas were the son of a sister of Fergus (for example, Scrooge’s Aunt Sarah, mentioned in ZD 62-08-12). 

This option fits with Douglas still considering himself a McDuck in Gold Foolery, as his mother would have been one. In addition, Douglas mentions Scrooge’s “side of the family” while talking about Fergus, indicating that he is related to Scrooge through Fergus rather than Downy. Rosa’s authorial intent appears to have been that Titus “Dingus” and Molly only had three offspring, but this is never specifically stated in a story. Even Rosa’s The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck sketches only specifically say that the two had “3 sons”, but say nothing of daughters.


The natural follow-up question would be “who are Whitewater’s parents?” The best candidate for his father is probably Mazuma Duck (who is a cousin of Scrooge with the surname “Duck”). Like Douglas, Mazuma spent his life trying to become rich; the only difference being that Mazuma succeeded. As for Whitewater’s mother… no clue!

I'm afraid you really didn't remember properly, Sim—and since you were already concerned you hadn't, you probably should have rechecked the story before presenting your memories of it as canon. (It's important to me because I consulted with Lars on this story; we don't want it remembered as showing something it doesn't!)

In the story (Inducks link here), there is the question of whether Douglas is a McDuck by blood, or "only" adopted. This will be proven by Scrooge and Douglas locating an important, vintage family tree hidden deep in Castle McDuck.

Meanwhile, Chisel McSue has forged a fake McDuck family tree that supposedly shows that Chisel's new accomplice, Milton Mallard, is a McDuck relative and entitled to a lot of money as an heir. Chisel's plan is to replace the vintage McDuck family tree with his own forgery, but Chisel has to keep Douglas and Scrooge from reaching the vintage family tree before he does.

As things end up,

{Spoiler}the vintage family tree is destroyed in a fire before Scrooge can fully inspect it, so Scrooge and Douglas apparently can't learn (at least for now) whether Douglas is related by blood or adopted. (I say "apparently" because the way the story is set up, there's a moment, right before the tree is destroyed, in which Scrooge might have learned and then kept it secret from Douglas... but we're clearly not supposed to know the truth for ourselves.)

Anyway, the important thing is that we don't decisively learn that Douglas isn't a blood relative. He still could be! Although, since Douglas has saved Scrooge's life, Scrooge feels the distinction of blood isn't important—Douglas is a true McDuck regardless, because "family is family if it feels like family."

(And, I add myself, apart from saving Scrooge's life and genuinely caring about the family, Douglas is possibly the most McDucklike McDuck who ever existed: he's so stingy that he thinks the rest of the already-stingy clan are generous! Wow!)

So, I went through line by line as it was the easiest way to organize them. You might notice one or two names not matching up - either the name is a holdover from a previous build that I used for identification purposes or the character pictured has a name that I used, again, for convenience.
In most cases, I was relatively lax in regards to counting something as proven; if there was a scan provided, I was content in most cases to accept a source.

If I am not mistaken, then Dwight is a cousin of Donald from YD 68-09-23. Dwight's brothers on the tree and many other relatives whose names start with a D are also from that strip. The strip does not give a family name. So to attach them as children of Joao Barbosa is, I assume, a personal choice and not based on any in story evidence. 

A complete list of sources for everyone on the tree would indeed be a good idea. It can also avoid some duplications or accidental misplacements. 

On another note, I have some more potential additions/changes for the tree:

I just watched the DuckTales episode Hotel Strangeduck, in which Ludwing von Strangeduck appears. He is included in the tree as “Ludwig von Strangeduck” but he is actually called “Ludwing von Strangeduck” in the episode. However, I was wondering why he is actually in the tree at all. In the tree, he his related to the McDucks, but I did not find any indication for this in the episode. The only thing I could find is that he is probably related to a certain “H.G. Duck”, who lived from 1894 to 1942, since the grave of H.G. Duck is at the graveyard of the castle. So, Ludwing might be related to the rest of the Duck family, but the episode does not state how. Anyway, if you want to include Ludwing von Strangeduck, you should also include his sister Featherika von Strangeduck, who also appears in the episode.

Some more relatives that I found that are not yet on the tree I think:

Neeltje Geertruida is a second cousin (Dutch: achternicht) of Grandma Duck in H 98005. She is just mentioned by Grandma Duck and not seen. She is apparently still alive, because Grandma Duck said that she talked with her yesterday.

Betsie is a niece of Grandma Duck H 2010-349. Donald says that Grandma Duck wants to go for a few days to her niece Betsie in Kwaaksterheide, so Donald needs to take care of the farm.

Woah. I had no idea that the "D" cousins, uncles, and aunts came from a Taliaferro strip. It looks like Bob Karp decided independently of Carl Barks to give Donald an aunt named "Daphne." Ever since its release, my headcanon for Gladstone Gander's parents has been based on the wonderful fanfiction comic The White Balloon by Sarah Jolley, which, without spoiling too much, depicts Goosetave and Daphne as having had a wholesome relationship and being deceased in the present. However, there is now an official story depicting Goosetave as being alive in the present-day (H 2021-263), though I haven't been able to read it as it doesn't appear to yet be available in English. I wonder if that story mentioned anything about the whereabouts of Aunt Daphne. If it didn't, then it could be that Goosetave and Daphne are a still living divorced couple, with Daphne remarrying to the Uncle Denton mentioned in YD 68-09-23? That totally upends my entire headcanon about Gladstone's childhood, but it seems to work better with "official" evidence. Still love The White Balloon, though. I guess it's still simpler to just conflate Barks and Rosa's Daphne with Bob Karp's Daphne, with Denton being her current husband and Dan, Derrick, and Douglas being either their children together or the children of one of them from a previous marriage. This would make Dan, Derrick, and Douglas the names of Gladstone's brothers, half-brothers, or stepbrothers, depending on how the exact relationships work.

If this theory that Goosetave and Daphne are divorced in the present-day is true, then I may have an idea for a remarriage for Goosetave. Ever since Carl Barks's first personal Duck family tree, there have been attempts to make Gladstone an adopted son of Matilda McDuck. I assume that this is to explain why Gladstone is considered a potential heir of Scrooge's. However, this does not square with Race to the South Seas, where Gladstone arrogantly describes Scrooge as his "mother's brother's brother-in-law." If Scrooge was his adopted mother's brother, then surely he would have used that relationship in his boasting! Could it be that Gladstone gained adopted kinship to Scrooge after this story, perhaps through a marriage between Goosetave and Matilda? I know that this does not work with your tree, LP , which has Matilda has the wife of Ludwig von Drake, but it does restore the Goosetave-Matilda marriage that was in Barks's original tree. I'm not a big fan of the Ludwig and Matilda pairing, but since Goosetave is not as well established of a character, I would be a bit more open to pairing him with her.

As for the other relatives in this strip (Uncle Dave, Aunt Dora, Cousins Dawn, Dick, and Dexter, and cousins Dudley, Duncan, Dwight, Dominic, and Dennis), I personally would identify them with some of the unnamed relatives seen in The Overnight Hero. "Dick" could indeed be the detective "Dicky Drake" from that story.
