A fun 10 page long story starring Mickey Mouse. Although it's one of those stories Mickey is fighting bad guys, he's wearing the same shorts as in 30s cartoons rather than his more mature outfit. A nice contrast.
The owner of the local ice cream store...
Ahem... it's gelateria.
Sorry. So, as I was saying, the owner of the local gelateria has to leave town for business and asks Mickey and Horace to take care of his shop. We all know how kind and helpful those two guys are, so they accept.
No sooner has the owner left than a suspicious guy appears. It seems he belongs to some protection racket. He forcefully demands that Mickey gives him money.
Mickey refuses. Horace has no idea about any of this, since, during that conversation, he was elsewhere.
Mickey soon finds out that that guy is not all talk. When the newly ordered merchandize is delivered, an unpleasant surprise awaits our brave mouse: Herring flavored ice cream. Chicken flavored ice cream. Liver flavored ice cream.
Mickey is freaking out. Who is gonna eat that stuff? Their shop will go out of business. (By the way, am I the only one who would like to see what such ice cream tastes like?)
The next time the blackmailer shows up, Mickey is forced to pay so that he gets 'normal' ice cream. Nevertheless, due to that exchange, he now knows that the guy works at the factory that provides the shop with merchandize. So he decides to use the 'faulty' ice cream as a weapon and goes there.
Another surprise awaits him, though. He finds out that the blackmailer is a worker constantly abused by his boss, a coward who takes it out on store owners by blackmailing them.
Mickey agrees not to tell on him, on the condition that he returns the money to his victims. Then he 'showers' him with the faulty ice cream and opens the door. A horde of hungry cats attracted by the unconventional flavor attacks the blackmailer.
I think that the ending was a little dark. Mickey could be more sympathetic to the blackmailer after finding out what he was going through at his workplace. Perhaps he could help him find a better job.
Anyway, it's a fun little read.
