We're all familiar enough with Rosa's famous depiction of Scrooge's youth, based on Barks' comments, but it's hardly the only one. I was hoping this thread might make a start in compiling all the other stories that depict Scrooge's youth. Leaving Barks and Rosa aside for a moment.

From Fausto Vitiliano:
The "Scrooge's millions" series, covering how he made his first twenty million. It follows him from the Klondike to the early 20th century.

From Vicar:
Plunkett's Emporium, in which Scrooge and Glomgold work at a turn-of-the-century department store.

From Kari Korhonen:
The McDuck Journals, following Scrooge out from the Klondike.

From Kruse/Verhagen:
In the Footsteps of Jules Verne contains a flashback to 1918, when Scrooge financed Papa Chan's army during the Chanmurian Civil War

Given what we've been able to find in the family tree thread, I bet we dig up quite a bit on Scrooge's past. What stories do you remember?

The "Scrooge's Millions" series would have benefitted from someone like Joe Torcivia doing the English scripting, in my opinion. It already has a Vic Lockman-esque feel to it, and it could have been more entertaining if it were given a better than merely auto-translated script that would bring out the humor in it.

Given what we've been able to find in the family tree thread, I bet we dig up quite a bit on Scrooge's past. What stories do you remember?

I thought that Flintheart Glomgold would have been working with his father's Diamond Mine Company and his father's Gold Mine Company in The Union of South Africa at that time.  Did he commute from there to Duckburg every day on a private AIR BALLOON??  Trips from South Africa to Calisota would have been heavily against the prevailing winds.  That direction would have taken several days.  He'd have had little time to work in a department store, and only enough time in the mines to be a periodic consulting advisor.  The two scenarios are incongruant.

On the contrary, I find that American translations often try way too hard. Not specifically Scrooge's Millions, which didn't grab me when I first read in Dutch either, but in general. Dutch dialogue is occasionally clever, but fairly grounded. American localisations have increasingly emphasized creative wordplay since the Gladstone period, but sometimes it feel so enforced it ends up distracting from the comic. But that's my opinion.

It's not exclusive to Disney comics, though. There's a slice of American comics, rooted in mid-century customs, that's developed a its own idiolect. It's part of the identity of the 'funnies'. You don't have that in a country like, say, France.

(Imagine my surprise when I read a Bucky Bug comic in the original English for the first time! We've had our share of Bucky comics in the Netherlands, but ever since his first appearance in 1953, translators scrapped the rhyming scheme. I can't help but think that that helped his popularity, both among readers and writers!)

I think I know of only two stories with flashbacks to Scrooge's Klondike years that are not on caballero's impressive list:

Joel Katz & Tom Anderson/Jose Cardona Blasi, Fear of Buying (1987)--Scrooge avoids doing business on a certain date, because on that date back in the Klondike he lost a claim stake and a 25¢ bet

Gail Renard & Tom Anderson/Juan Torrez Perez, The Teddy Bear (1988)

I didn't see my own 1989 - 17 page "return to The Klondike" adventure story, "Reunion at Beaver Creek" (D92047), included in Caballero's list.  But, maybe that's because it hasn't been drawn in final form, and printed yet. It has several flashback panels to Scrooge's youth in The Klondike, and a rival, Black Pierre (Black Pete with a moustache and logger's hat) that is different from Soapy Slick, plus a new, present-day, Klondike adventure, in which Pierre sends Scrooge on a ride through the icy, near frozen water of a chain of sluice boxes, and Scrooge is a veritable icicle when he reaches the bottom.  Huey, Dewey, and Louie have to thaw him out before he freezes to death.

Some years ago on facebook a user recreated another "Life and Time" based on Guido Martina's stories, called L'Altra $aga di Paperon de' Paperoni. I think to remember it may miss some stories, but considering the enormous numbers of story produced, forgetting one or two it's totally justified in my opinion.
