A while back we had an interesting conversation (that I can no longer find) about stories with only unique and original characters. Well, my latest walk through INDUCKS brought me to the American series Comic Zone, published around 2006 by the looks of it. These included stories from the Disney Adventures magazine, including a couple of characters unique to that title. And that that is how I found Gorilla Gorilla and Kid Gravity - as well as the ugliest Mickey Mouse issue I have ever seen! I can't find any info on these characters -- "gorilla gorilla" on Google just give monkey pictures, and "kid gravity disney" gives you, well, Gravity Falls, naturally.
I thought it might be interesting to share this, just by how far removed they look from your average Disney series. Part of that is just the TV animation style of the early 2000s, but it just looks so ugly to me. Anyway, I find it weird. Enjoy!
Nice find! The Mickey issue may not have the most appealing art but looking at the things that are on INDUCKS, the gags aren't bad actually. It reminds me of Ziche's humour a bit, as well as some of the more "out there" of the French homage series.
As for the rest, Google Search is good if you know how to use it There are so many options like filtering by date or searching for phrases, and putting "Kid Gravity" "Disney" like that in the search field already yields some results.
"These full-color compilations are a must have for fans of the immensely popular comics that run in Disney Adventures magazine and Comic Zone. Each book features a different character or theme picked from the top-rated magazine strips.
Volume Four follows the adventures of Disney Adventures original strip Kid Gravity, a universe-saving kid attending an intergalactic high school."
"Gorilla is a small gorilla that can grow into a King Kong size of himself called Gorilla Gorilla. He usually fights a giant fire breathing lizard called Lizard Lizard, who is really his short tempered roomate, Lizard."
And the comic's creator Arthur Balthazar has a website where you can even read the comics:
So bizarre... Mickey and Goofy comics by Glenn McCoy, the creator of the newspaper strip The Duplex. I guess there really IS always something new to discover out there.
Not sure how I feel about McCoy's gags, though. Some of them are funny, but they mostly just read like standard jokes. By which I mean, they don't feel very specific to the classic Disney characters. Even this page playing on Goofy's stupidity feels like it could be easily repurposed as a Duplex strip with Fang (the dog) and Eno, the two main characters there.
