Fantagraphics reissuing Silly Symphonies 1932-1935 volume

Hello fellow duckfans,

I got a previews email for a new Silly Symphonies volume coming out in a few months, this time published by Fantagraphics. Glad there’s still some exciting stuff coming down the pike! Will this include the same extras from the IDW volume? The original is starting to get pricey and it would be great to have a cheaper option.

The need for a cheaper option was one of our reasons for doing it; and a warm endorsement from my former IDW colleague Dean Mullaney, main editor of the original edition, was another.

Extras are very similar to IDW—though we've actually added a few more, including this relatively modern sequel to Bucky's "War With the Flies" story.

Just ordered the first volume, having missed the IDW run. It'll be nice to read these stories in the order they were published - and in their original language! (That said, I'm forever grateful to the Dutch editor who decided not to translate the rhyming scheme in Bucky Bug stories!

With two volumes out or announced it’d be nice to just get the whole series now in this new format and I’ll sell off my old set. Have they announced if they’re reprinting all four volumes?

I imagine that would depend on the sales of the initial book. It wouldn't be the first time a reprint series was stopped in its tracks due to low demand.

Any reason why you would sell off the old set? I thought it was fine?

Haven't seen any info about more volumes after the two announced. But IDW's volume 3 had a lot of Hiawatha strips, and it judging from recent European reprint collections all Hiawatha stories seems to be on the no-no list. I'd be surprised if they are going to be included in any Fantagraphics books.

Oh yeah, vol 3 is never getting a reprint. Maybe if you're lucky they'll do a different volume or volumes that contains the material from vol 4 and the non-banned material from vol 3, but the original vol 3 is not happening.

This one has a few extras in volume 1 and perhaps more later. Plus I don’t need two of the same set and I like these cover jacketless versions better.

Just thumbed through my copy and yeah, second half of the book is all Little Hiawatha.

Exciting news! Here's hoping that the Donald Duck comic strip will get republished by Fantagraphics too, the after market price is insane for them now.

That would be awesome, but even more awesome would be if they continued the daily and sunday strip series where IDW stopped them.

I really hope they're going to continue with Al Taliaferro strips. Also, a reprint of the first issues wouldnàt be bad, I've got only volumes 1-4 and the first of the Sundays.

I just got the new Fantagraphics copy yesterday and was looking at both together. By and large they are the same book with some formatting, color, and pre-story pictures changed. The story pages look identical to IDW’s version. The biggest difference I could find was the addition of the sequel story as described above. It’s a beautiful book though and anyone who was on the fence should be happy adding this one to their library.

I second this. I would buy these in a heartbeat. I only have one of the Al Taliaferro books and love it, but I can’t afford to drop $399.95 for a book (the current price for volume 3).
