All this talk about the Junior Woodchucks suddenly makes me wonder… do we have any indication on whether Gyro was once a woodchuck? We know his father was, and his nephew Newton is too according to some Italian stories.
his nephew Newton is too according to some Italian stories.
Is it just an Italian idea? This is Inducks' list of stories featuring both Newton and the JW, and the first Italian story of that list is the 8th. How about the first seven? Do these stories show/imply or not that he is a JW?

Huh? I don't know. I've only ever seen Italian stories using Newton as a JW, but it's totally possible that it exists elsewhere. Anyway, what about my original question?

Well, I guess some American user here will know the answer about those seven stories: five of them were published in Huey, Dewey and Louie Junior Woodchucks and the other two in Mickey Mouse (why would a story set in the duck universe be published in Mickey Mouse is beyond me).

I've never seen any American, Dutch, or Danish story have Newton, Gyro, or any member of Gyro's family being members of The Junior Woodchucks.

The INDUCKS entry for one of those stories, "Newton's Way" from HDL JW, lists Newton in this way: "Newton (JW)". So that kinda makes me think he must be a JW in that story. I don't have any of the comics that ran these seven stories, though, so I can't provide direct evidence.

That's… not really the main topic here, anyway. Whether he is so in non-Italian comics or not, Newton is a JW in at least some stories. What interests me here is whether Gyro is/was a JW.
(To close the off-topic: Yes, Newton was a JW in about half of the stories mentioned above, the first and best one being "Right is Might".)
Before we really close the off-topic, can I ask you if 1966's "Right is Might" (6th story with Newton, one year after his debut story in 1965) portray Newton as being a JW since the beginning, or if he's shown becoming a JW in the story? And how about the earlier "Goat-Getters" (described by Inducks as "HDL use Newton's animal caller to catch a mountain goat")? Is Newton a JW or not in that story?
I've never come across a story, American or otherwise, that depicted Gyro as a JW or claimed he once had been a member.
I guess this is the only possible answer for the thread's original question, since I don't think there is any story which addresses the issue of whether Gyro was or was not a JW.
Newton is not a JW in the two stories from MM, only in
Right is Might He's a JW from the start, but he and HDL are the only Woodchucks to be seen. That is until the Beagle Brats join them in the end! The New Member Here he is called "Giggy" (if I remember correctly) and also looks younger than usual, so maybe he's a different nephew altogether? Newton's Way The Fib-O-Scope Gregory's take on Newton is interesting, because here he looks older than usual. I just noticed the Brazilian version of the comic changed his looks.

Given the different look and name, and given that he is said to be a new member (while Newton was already a JW in "Right is Might"), are we really sure he was meant to be the same character? Inducks lists him as Newton and says Giggy is an alternate name used only in this story, but this is questionable unless he is said to be Gyro's nephew. I see that even in the Italian version he is called Einstein rather than Newton.
