I noticed today that it says on Disney Wiki that the Joe Books Darkwing comic has been cancelled, with #8 as the last issue. Can this be trusted? I don't remember anyone confirming that here. The Joe Books website is no help.
We've been spammed with "#SaveDarkwing" tweets for months now, and Aaron has said lots of times that sales on the trade paperbacks will show if the series will continue.
I haven't seen any official statements, but I doubt we'll see more original Darkwing Duck stories from Joe Books. Personally I didn't like any of the Darkwing stories from Boom!/Joe Books much, so if they decide to continue the series I'd rather see some changes done to it. Maybe give other creators a try like they are doing with the Princess series.
What I do want however is continuation of the Darkwing Duck Classics series that Boom! only did one volume of. There's still a lot of old Darkwing stories that are hard to track down that could be re-printed. Actually I wouldn't mind a reissue of Darkwing Duck Classics vol.1 either as I've had a hard time trying to find a reasonable priced copy of it...
For anyone who missed out on getting a physical copy of the omnibus, it is still available on Amazon, Google Play and iTunes as a digital download. So there is at least still a way to purchase it without shelling out to the overpriced resellers.
Exclusive for Wondercon, the second trade collection of Darkwing Duck from @joebooksco and @officialdisneycomics Months before it hits retail you can pick up volume two of the DW comics at table D-17 at Artist Alley. Writer @aaronsparrow and I will both be on hand to sign your copies. We will also have the first collection as well as individual issues. #darkwingduck #letsgetdangerous
So that's probably it. But I doubt there's going to be anyting exclusive about it, I guess it's just a pre-sale of the same print of the trade paperback that will later be in regular sale.
Don't mind me. Just bumping this thread from nine months ago.
So here's official confirmation that Joe Books will be losing the license to Darkwing Duck at the end of the year. (So in three weeks, I guess.) So if the Darkwing comic were to rise a third time, it won't be under Joe Books. I'm just going to sit here hoping IDW ends up with it.
The question I guess is now what the fate of other Disney titles under this publisher will be given how extremely erratic their release schedule has been over the past year and the number of books they solicited that never came out.
The Disney Princess series looks like is still planned to be going forward seeing as they have an issue of it solicited for February. The thing about that though is that IDW has a Tangled series that's starting in January. Does that mean Rapunzel and the other Tangled characters are going to stop appearing in the Disney Princess series or are they just going to have them featured in books from two separate publishers?
The last issue of Frozen they released was an annual issue that came out back in September and no other issue was solicited since then that I can recall. I'm going to assume that series is done.
Every other series they ever started ended after only four issues. These include Cars, Finding Dory, Pirates of the Caribbean and Star Vs the Forces of Evil. Were these always intended to be four issues? Did they get cancelled due to poor sales or some other reason? Do they still have the licenses to any of those franchises? What happened to the Toy Story comic that was solicited at the start of the year and then vanished off the face of the Earth?
And all of this likely means that the two trade releases of Joe Books' Darkwing series will be going out of print very soon so if you want those, pick them up while there's still time.
So if the Darkwing comic were to rise a third time, it won't be under Joe Books. I'm just going to sit here hoping IDW ends up with it.
Joe Books could renew the license I guess. That the one they have is ending doesn't nessesary mean it's lost forever.
So far IDW has only ordered cover art directly, not comic art - all comics they have published have been created for another company (including Donald Quest, DuckTales and Tangled: The Series even if they saw the first printing under IDW). So I doubt they are interested in working with Sparrow/Silvani as new comic stories needs to be created directly for IDW then.

They probably have different licenses for the movies, the series and maybe even for the Disney Princess "franchise" all including Rapunzel. Also, Joe Book already have a Tangled Fun Book planned for 2018, and the previous Fun Books all had comic stories inside.
Maybe the two of them need to see if a European publisher is interested in more Darkwing Duck comics. Both William Van Horn and Don Rosa have created stories for European publishers (although, to be realistic, that was back in the 1990s-early 2000s, so it may not be as common now).

Is Darkwing Duck popular outside the US? I never got the impression that he was, or ever saw any European Darkwing comics.

Just because they haven't directly commissioned any non-cover material doesn't necessarily mean they can't: IDW publishes entire lines of Hasbro-based and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle comics, and a few other things like My Little Pony and Ghostbusters, almost all of which are made in-house.
The only real sticking points might be if they simply don't want to do it, or their contract with Disney doesn't let them.
