Are we sure those are pink feathers, though? I'd assume it's just bare skin, and in that story Gyro is a kind of bird-dognose or bird-man hybrid rather than a pureblooded bird.
I never bothered to ask myself this question, but I'd say the colorist meant for him to have a pink skin.

I agree, that example doesn't quite hold, since it was a decision the colorist made before Gyro's coloring was established. On the other hand, the coloring of Fenton Crackshell-Cabrera is a decision being made officially by Disney. And I would argue that Gyro is still a "bird-dognose hybrid" (of unclear species) rather than a "pureblooded bird" ... also, he has human feet!
I am unfamiliar with Mr. Miranda's work, and care little for Fenton as a character, so this reimagining doesn't really matter to me, but it does seem an example of altering an existing character to suit a celebrity actor, rather than find a voice-actor who suits the character, and that's usually not a good thing. As was the case with the voice actors for HD&L. But we'll see, I guess. Still, did they really need to add a hyphenated "Cabrera" to this character's name? Why not just say "Crackshell" is a Latin name in this universe? And I wonder how they're going to portray his mother in this series, given the political correctness-related issues involved? Honestly, though, it's not something I care a great deal about. I agree with drakeborough that I would have been happier if the whole second-wave DuckTales concepts (Gizmoduck, Bubba) were left out of this reboot, but the creators seem to be trying to appeal to both comics fans (more than the original series did) and fans of the original series, so I suppose it's expected.
Meanwhile, how exactly does Gyro have an "intern"? He's always been portrayed as a self-employed inventor. Are we going to see him on the faculty of the Univesity of Calisota at Duckburg in this series?
"cabrera' would mean (in English) "female goatherder" in Spanish language (but not in Italian). Why would Fenton be given THAT name in Italian (capraio or capraia)? Why should Fenton be Spanish? Why would he be a female goatherder?
I agree, that example doesn't quite hold, since it was a decision the colorist made before Gyro's coloring was established.
There's also the fact that Barks, like any other Disney comic book author, drew his stories in black and white and had no control on the coloring process, so we can't say how he wanted Gyro's body to be colored. He is white in Barks' paintings, but that's because he followed what the colorist had been doing for decades; had they colored Gyro's body yellow or pink, Barks would have probably do the same thing in his paintings. That said, I don't think Barks meant for him to be pink like humans or dogfaces (it looks strange, weird and "wrong"), and I think he would have chosen white over yellow in order to fit with Donald and the other main characters.
I'll add a bit of trivia about Panchito, who is an anthropomorphic rooster: in the comics his body is usually colored like in the movie (brown)...

Me, I would have gone further and left out even characters created in the first series like Launchpad, Webby etc., but I knew right away it was virtually impossible that this would happen.

Not quite sure for the Italian part, but Frank Angones has answered the last question:
"quackberg asked:
Wow! The new Gizmoduck/ Fenton looks awesome! With Fenton being Latin-inspired, which is really cool, you guys also added a second last name for him it seems. Can you tell what the insperation for it was? And while I'm at it after looking at the DT trailer (for the millionth time) I really have come to love the design for McDuck Manor! So I'm wondering if there was any real life inspiration(s) for it?
Frank Angones:
About 75% of my friends growing up in Miami had hyphenate last names, so it felt like a natural fit. As for the choice of “Cabrera,” it actually relates more to Fenton’s dear Mama. More on her later."
And I agree with Baar Baar Jinx, the white-feathered Fenton looked too similar to Donald.
Since they're going with a Hispanic Fenton anyway, I would have gone a step further and given him black hair, to further distinguish him from Donald in black-and-white media. I speak, of course, from a purely character design point-of-view, Fenton as a character does not appeal to me at all, and the whole Gizmoduck concept (the only reason for Fenton to exist, really) is not part of the comics-based universe that I care about.
With regards to Webby, I actually kind of like what we've seen of the updated version; now that's she's an active participant rather than the annoying female toddler of the original series, she could add the much-needed female factor to what is otherwise a boys' club. Launchpad, I agree, is redundant with Donald being main cast (as is Fenton out of the Gizmosuit; Launchpad and Fenton together essentially played the Donald role), but he's so closely associated with the series that there was no way they could really drop him.

Black hair would indeed help distinguish him from Donald in black-and-white media, but ironically they would make him similar to another comic book character. I am talking about Lord Quackett, the secret identity of Fantomius/Fantomallard:

Fenton's mother was formerly a goatherder???
Who knows? Maybe the idea is just that she's an "old goat".

Cabrera is a fairly common Hispanic last name. It may well refer to the voice actor they are going to cast for that role. I daresay this version of Fenton's mother will be significantly different from the original one.

If they wanted her name to signify an "old goat", her name would have been "Cabravieja" in Spanish, or "Cabravecchia" in Italian. "Old goat" is generally used for a stubborn or cantankerous old man, - but not usually for a feisty, interfering, loud, obnoxious woman.

This makes the MOST sense. If they want her to be of Hispanic origins, the actor who plays her part may be named Cabrera. Is there a known American voice actor with that surname (I can only think of several professional baseball players as US celebrities with that name.
In theory, though, his surname should be Cabrera-Crackshell if Cabrera is his mother's surname: IIRC generally it's [Mother's surname] [Father's surname] whether hyphened or not.
Dunno. It seems a half-assed choice for politically correct points, something I personally detest. I would have preferred completely replacing the Crackshell surname with the Cabrera one(or, and I think it would have been leagues better, translate it. "Cascaragrieta" sounds fine to my Italian ear), but that might be because as Italian I'm not used to that kind of mixed-up surnames so it feels "fake".

No, this first family name is from father, the second one is from mother. The show director (or whoever it is) is right.

From the Tumblr account of Frank Agnones (story editor for the new DuckTales):
Q: Are you going to be making new Beagle Boys for the rebooted series? I always loved how ridiculously large Ma Beagle's family was.
A: Don’t see how you could do a Scrooge show without Beagles. Also love the opportunity to contrast how Ma treats her boys with how Scrooge treats his kids.
It’s all about family.
So it looks like we're going to get Beagle Boys more like the ones from the original series, rather than ones from the comics universe. Expected, I suppose, but a disappointing choice in my estimation.
