Since the Beagle Boys are on-topic at the minute, I'd just like to air that I still don't understand the changes they made to Burger Beagle.
In all honesty, I feel like he shows the general philosophy when it comes to character changes in this show.
So, in their own vision, Burger was a problematic character; he personified a significant problem that was prominent in popular culture at the time.
More-or-less his entire character amounted to fat jokes, so they wanted to change that. In all honesty, that's a viewpoint I can get behind; sometimes, a character represents something that's outdated, and if you're going to bring the character into the modern era, changes have to be made.
So, they took this problematic character, removed all of the traits that made him a problematic character and... called it a day.
They've changed his overweight appearance so that he's now skinny and lanky.
As for his personality... the Beagle Boys don't really get many opportunities to shine, and Burger gets very little within those opportunities. As such, he's basically just there.
Like Glomgold, Gyro or Quackfaster, it's just a case of... why are they there?
They're the same character in name only. I'm not trying to say that the original Burger was a masterpiece of character writing, but why not just call him something else?
It's particularly pointless in this case because they're the BEAGLE BOYS. Their whole thing is that they're interchangeable. If you have to follow the 1987 version, why not just use Baggy or one of the other Beagles? If you're insistent on using the skinny design, why not just give him a new name?
Even if, for some reason, Burger was an invaluable character that had to stay around... the idea that it was to avoid offensive portrayals doesn't really land either.
Mainly because of another character they changed; Doofus Drake.
Doofus, another character who was changed to avoid fat-shaming.
So, they changed him to being a villainous, antagonistic figure and threw in some stereotypes around mental illness, too. How is this portrayal any better?!
I was actually pretty disgusted by Doofus Drake's portrayal in his first appearance. By his latest appearance in season 2, they've worked on it a little to tone it down and to focus more on the "spoiled rich kid" side of his character, but wow, his earliest appearances were awful.
It's bad enough as it is, but he's one of the characters that was radically changed specifically because he's an offensive stereotype.
With that in mind, Burger's changes make even less sense.
If it's to avoid offensive stereotypes, why do they have offensive stereotypes in place with Doofus Drake?
If they have to change him, why not just add one of the multiplujillion other Beagles?
If it HAS to be Burger, why not give him a personality of SOME description?
It's not faithful to comics, it's not faithful to the original series and it doesn't add anything or even really work the way they intended.
I know I'm beating a dead horse, but seriously, so many changes that amount to nothing.
(Sorry if this ended up just being an aimless ramble, but it bugs me and I figured 'hey, it's relevant, why not?')
