He bears very little resemblance to the other contender, a chicken, either, though. I'm sticking with eagle.
He's tall and skinny. A marshbird is more likely. But, then, he should have a long beak, like a crane or loon. Barks just made Gyro a slightly birdlike Human, and didn't really have a bird species in mind when he drew him. Then, he was grasping at straws when coming up with "a chicken".
In his first story, he is very similar to a red-crowned crane.

By the way, here's a theory that's kind of related to this topic: going by the chicken hypothesis, Sarah Jolley makes the argument that Gyro may actually be a transgender man. Note no crest (as opposed to, say, Panchito, or Rockhead Rooster), and that he's only ever called a chicken as opposed to a rooster. It's a fun little idea, and certainly more plausible than that Eurasia Toft delusions we discussed a while ago, although if like me you buy into the cockatoo idea it becomes a little baseless.

Guys, it's obvious.
He's a gearloose. In all seriousness though, given that mixed birds are long established in this universe, my hypothesis is that he's some sort of chicken-cockatoo hybrid. Maybe a little grebe or stork mixed in.

I can't see Gyro as any of these birds, i can only see him as a sparrow
I'm sure that Barks specified that Gyro is a chicken (I believe it was in Donald Ault's "Carl Barks Conversations", that Barks described Gyro as "a six foot tall red headed chicken!").
That's how Carl described Gyro to me, too. He said that he only intended him to be used in the first story he used him, as a vehicle to provide Gladstone with something from his shopping list that would be strange, unexpected and funny, and be a funny way for Gladstone to obtain it (a pogo stick). He didn't originally intend to use him in even a second story, never mind the hundreds of times he showed him in later stories. Barks told me that if he HAD intended to use him as a regular, recurring character, he'd have designed him to be much smaller, perhaps Donald's size.
He never thought about having to give a chicken, chicken-like feet (analogous to Donald having duck-like feet.

Still, i think Barks could have made him more similar to a chicken, because his design leaves too much speculation about his species

But I don't think Barks really meant him to be a chicken in the first place. Robb's interesting post above suggests that Barks thought Gyro would be a one-time character. So he may not even have given a thought to his species.
I still like the idea of his being an eagle. But then we already have a scientist eagle (Emil), albeit an evil one, so that might not be the best choice. Rosa's suggestion of a cockatoo is interesting, but doesn't explain why Gyro is so tall.

I think he probably is a sparrow. It's the only species i can imagine Gyro being
