This week got Joes Gravity Falls shorts. I have briefly watched the show with my kids. My 15 year cried when he watched a marathon leading up to the end last fall.
For me this book was very disappointing, kind of gag reel type strips, none of the powerful story arcs or secret codes from the series.
I would be ok with that stuff as as back page filler.. but then again the title was shorts.
From what I understand, the comic is just cinestory versions of these two minute shorts that Disney made inbetween the two seasons of the show. www.youtube.com/watch?v=xJJPgsW0CyQ

Wow! I'm certainly glad I'm not a kid growing up in these current times. That is an insult to a 6 or 7-year old's intelligence!

I haven't checked these shorts before, but the show itself is actually very good. They have some mediocre episodes which are not that great, but the theme of the whole story is more profound than average kid shows. It is a story about two siblings growing up together realising that one day they will have to face their own lifes without the company of each other. They have some really sentimental elements here.
Sometimes you may feel the director overdid it and the whole situation looks too ridicules, but you can also see the in-universe characters complaining about that all the time. Most of the stories are logical.
Those shorts do show some of the character's quirks but are a very poor representation of the actual show.
From what I watched there are episodes that are filler and more that are very rich.
Not really impressed with the Joe Books in general but I will say this about there is a thing to the cinema story approach. Back in the golden age when Dell got a shot to do book for a cartoon or tv series they would start by adapting an existing episode for the first issues.
Their reasoning was if it sold well enough on the first few they would develop original stories.

I hope you are right that there are much better episodes. They should put their best foot forward when a show is starting up.
