I don't like very much the art in the recent Smurf comic books. It feels colder, and doesn't have as much the sense of wonder and mystery as when Peyo drew it.

The Smurfs don't look as cute; for instance, they are drawn with narrower heads than when Peyo drew them (do you know the basics of character design? Big head=cuter. It's simple!!), and the "red eye" thing is awful and stupid, in my opinion.

Some stories feel completely pointless, such as the "Golden Tree" and "Bathing Smurfs" stories. It doesn't feel as epic as when Peyo did it. Some stories even go as far as recycling Peyo's stories: the "Smurf Menace" story is a repeat of "Smurf VS Smurf"!!

Of course, not all modern stories are bad. The "Book that tells everything" story was interesting and could be seen as a satire of the Internet... The "Smurf Police Force" brought interesting points about Smurf identity, although it is awkward when the Smurfs need to pay fines when they abandoned the money system (so they are paying in hazelnuts!!)... and it has an annoying copout ending.

Oh, and by the way, I hate the look of the 3D-CGI Smurfs from the 2011-2013 movies. Not to mention their waste-of-potential considering they use the cliché-overused premise of "coming to the modern world" instead of focusing on classic forest adventure.

I don't know much about the Busy Town universe to answer that. I am guessing it took inspiration from both the books and the cartoon, although they made changes such as Mr Fixit being able to actually fix things so that you could help him make a machine that works.

OK, but I think you heard it wrong about Barks creating Daisy. I think Daisy was created by either Walt Disney or Al Taliaferro. So you don't like the newer Smurfs stories that much but I do agree that the Smurfs stories by Peyo were very good. Maybe you don't like the Smurfs live action movie series because they have blue irises on their eyes or you don't like it because of the plots? Well, I also think that the Busytown game was inspired by both the books and the cartoon. OK, Thanks for answering me!

I really like the art style that I see in some of IDW's comics, the Italian art style, right? X3 I think they definitely make the characters look really cute.

1)I don't mind, but I prefer the one with eyebrows. And, I like him with white face in comics and with coloured faces in covers.

2) Without nostrils. I mean ducks with nostrils ad "old" (I thought Don Rosa was an old authors, indeed)

3) They draw characters with human feet?
I've never noted it. But I think they're better with duck feet.

4) I mean blue eyes as "The character is ill". So I prefer they are used only when the character is ill.
About Daisy's hair... I prefer her standard hairstyle.

5) I prefer Italian character design: Mickey with green coat, blue t-shirt and red pants, and Donald with his traditional black shirt. I mean Mickey with red shorts as "old", as Ducks with nostrils. I like them when the story is really old or when they mean that's the old Mickey, but I don't like when they're used in new stories without any explaination ad in Egmont ones.

6) I prefer Phantom Blot wearing his mask when he "works" and without when he's at home. I also like when he has got the cloak but not the mask. I instead don't like when you can see the mouth in his mask.

7) I don't mind Hard Haid More or Hazel, because they don't respect human proportions. I don't mind realistic human characters with dog nose, too. When there are real human characters, yeah, it's odd. Why don't put 'em a nose?

8) I love Stefano Turconi's way, as in Pippo Reporter. And I loved Zootropolis.


All in all, I love Italian art, and don't like so much all Disney art that's not like it.

What's nose are you talking about? Did you mean a human nose or a dog nose? Well, I always thought that dog nose characters with realistic designs looks weird because I always prefer them to be drawn cartoony. Dognose characters looks better with cartoony designs than with realistic designs! .

What do you think? They still looks weird to me! .
Edit: Well, the realistic dog nose humans looks fine when they're drawn by Barks but not sure about the Egmont artists or the Dutch artists! .

I'm Italian and se often see, on Topolino, TV characters with a dog nose, and I don't think they're weird.

(The last issue of Topolino: she has not the dog nose, but it's quite similiar)

No, Orora's right. Barks wrote Mr Duck steps out, the cartoon in which Daisy debuted, and thus co-created Daisy, although he does not claim paternity to her as much as to other characters, since others worked on that cartoon too and so Daisy wasn't exactly "his" baby.

Ah, OK, I know that Barks wrote this animated short but I was not sure if he did created Daisy. I also heard that Gus Goose was also created by Carl Barks in the animated short where he debuted (Or maybe I heard it wrong because he was actually debuted in a Taliaferro strip from 1938). "Sorry for my mistake!" . I'm saying that because I was almost in tears but I know that every fans makes mistakes! .

Yeah, Barks was a professional with lot of of experience who knew how to balance the realism and cartoonish look. It's difficult to find a talent like that nowadays.

The image you posted, yeah, it's very odd.

Yeah, I think it is more important to stylize and make the celebrity more cartoonish before you stick a dognose or a beak on the person.

In the old French "Picsou Magazine" from the late 1980s, there used to be very nice "Duck" drawings of celebrities by French artist Patrice Croci (either him or François Pasquet or Olivier Fiquet, great professionals).

You know this thing called "Uncanny Valley"? It's an easy way to make people creeped out.

Yes, I loved those illustrations in the old French Disney magazines, when they ACTUALLY used Disney characters. And when the artists actually made professional efforts to draw them.


Nowadays, they are using ugly, uninspired, insipid not-Disney-related mascots that I really hate and I think they don't belong at all in the magazine.

Well, yes, I heard about this thing called "Uncanny Valley" before. I do agree that in the old french magazines, they actually used Disney characters compared to those scans of those mascot characters  from the modern french magazines that you posted. Yes, they really looks ugly, unoriginal and un-Disneyish. I'm also thinking that they don't belong to Picsou Magazine at all. Those characters should be putted in a non-Disney magazine and speaking of non-Disney characters, I wonder why are they still including non-Disney characters and stories in the modern french Disney magazines? They used those non-Disney stuff since 50s or 60s (You can correct me if I'm wrong). France is not the only country where the publishers used non-Disney stuff in a Disney magazine but in some older issues of  the Dutch Donald Duck magazine, the publishers included some non-Disney stories like The Smurfs. We have a dutch member here (That Duckfan/Duckfandownunder) who probably knows more about the dutch issues that featured non-Disney stories. If he read this post from me, I would be happy if he post some scans from non-Disney stories that were published on the Dutch Donald Duck magazine.

I meant, when they pur famous TV characters in Disney comics, they should always pur then a dog nose or a duck beak. Then, of course, they nave to make "Disney-ish" the character, and I indeed don't like characters in the image you posted.
And, I don't like characters Orora posted too, because they're Donald or Hewey with other clothes. They should be actually new characters.
