Yeah, you wouldn't expect Disney family-friendly comics to be scary, eh? That's what they also say about the Disney animated cartoons, and THOSE are famous for having dark and scary scenes, as early as Snow White and the Seven Dwarves!
Let us share comics we have read that had creepy, scary moments, or were simply unsettling with a feeling of doom.
I'll start with...
"Staying Awake" by Peter Härdfeldt (inducks.org/story.php?c=D+96190).
In this story, Scrooge has learned about a "life potion" that an alchemist from old times was working on, but who has mysteriously lost all his fortune.
He retrieves the recipe with Gyro, Donald and HDL, and as they are working on it, Scrooge hears them say "Look! It's gold!" but when he goes see them, Gyro and the children have turned into solid lifeless gold statues! Donald is in tears and full of despair, calling Scrooge responsible.
And then comes an epic and also unsettling moment...
The life potion has spread on the coins of Scrooge's money bin, and the money has come alive, forming a humanoid giant.
I still remember the dialogue:
Scrooge: "Oh! My money! You are alive!"
Money giant: "What do you mean, your money? We belong to ourselves!! And we sure are alive!!"
Scrooge: "This can't be, this is a nightmare... Of course, it must be because of the life potion!"
Money giant: "And we know who we are dealing with!"
Scrooge (awkwardly): "Yes, I am your beloved daddy! Come hug me!"
Money giant: "Our daddy?? You locked us up for years! Do you not understand? We want to move! To spread! Being prisoners of this bin... is true torture!"
Scrooge: "But... you were safe here!"
Money giant: "Safe? From whom? People love us! Only those who keep us locked in want to hurt us! People like... YOU!!!"
The money giant smashes his fist in front of Scrooge.
I really liked this part, because it kinda deconstructs Scrooge's hoarding and he literally has to come face to face with the thing he loves.
The art is awesome and the money giant looks threatening and imposing.
The story is a recommanded read for that last chapter alone, which has a great feeling of reckoning and doom. I haven't told you everything...
