This is going to be a great month! I've been wanting to read "The Persistence of Mickey" and "The Miner's Granddaughter!" for a long time. And finally getting a printed and colored copy of "The Big Sneeze!" is not bad either (you can read the story on Freddy Milton's webpage)

"The Persistence of Mickey" was orignially scheduled for WDC&S #720 from Boom!, but that issue ended up never being released.

I find it funny (weird - not "Ha! Ha!", that my Disney Comics editors won't even let me set up situations in my stories that imply that Donald and his nephews and Uncle Scrooge are in life danger, and, thus are acting like heroes, without even showing anyone near death; and yet, this month, Mickey Mouse has a Disney Comics magazine cover with Goofy's cousin's skin melting off his bare bones!!!! How is THAT fair???

The cover is from the animated short "Ghoul Friend". The Goofy-looking ghoul is already dead so no harm is done to him

What's interesting about the Persistence of Mickey story was that Boom was actually going to print that one before they lost their license to the Disney characters back in 2011. (They instead printed the second part of The Treasure of Marco Topo after part 1 was in their final Mickey Mouse issue.) Glad to see that story finally being released five years later.

The cover with Goofy on it is played for laughs. Neither him nor Mickey are meant to be in any serious danger in that scene. The zombie Goofy actually helps Mickey at the end of that story.

Looks like it'll be a great month! I'm also looking forward to The Persistence of Mickey, and The Big Sneeze, and the introductory appearance of Dickie Duck...which probably means there'll be more Dickie to come! Yay! Also interested to see that they'll do a U$ TPB collecting four instead of three issues, so that "Scrooge's Last Adventure" can be complete under one cover. I wondered how they would handle that.

Very interesting month, I bought one IDW comic book in several previous months, but in September I will buy two or three comics. I will definitely buy US, but the others comics also look interesting.

My complaint is not that Disney Comics are portraying ghoulishness or excessive danger to their characters.  But rather, the opposite.  That their "rules" for some of us are so "protective' of the extremely young readers, who are perceived as their main reading audience, that we creators have little fodder with which to make an interesting adventure story, or put the hero in an heroic situation. A hero can't be very heroic if he or she is in no real danger.  We are not supposed to show bad injury, death, near death, illness, or even mention death.  We are not even allowed to show the eating of meat.

Okay. Let me try to clarify things a bit better. First off, the Mickey and Goofy you see on that cover are not the Mickey and Goofy you typically see in Disney comics. They are adapted from a series of new Mickey Mouse shorts that are being shown on the Disney Channel. Watch the cartoon Hex linked to above if you haven't already. Mickey is not always meant to be heroic in these shorts more than he's just meant to make the viewer laugh and the same can be said for the classic Mickey shorts made throughout the 20's-40's. IDW is temporarily releasing a miniseries based off these new shorts in place of the normal Mickey comic series for a few months and like the shorts, they are most likely intended to be funny rather than tell stories about Mickey being heroic. Mickey is never at risk of being killed in any of these newer shorts because this version of Mickey is a funny cartoon character, not an adventure hero or a detective.

Mickey also happens to be Disney's company mascot and there's a chance that maybe they don't want children reading comics about Mickey or Donald getting into life threatening situations on a regular basis. It's not like every Carl Barks story showed Donald and the nephews about to be killed by something either. All those shorter stories that were just Donald getting himself into some ridiculous or funny situation? What you say about Disney being unfair is really just them being protective of their image. These characters do have a near-90 year legacy beyond their comic appearances. You can still tell interesting stories without nearly killing your characters.

Oh, they're doing Arriva Paperetta Yé-Yé? this is going to be painful. It's really not a good story, which means there's probably going to be a huge push for the localisation to "punch it up". Yeesh I'm cringing already.

It seems to be the editorial policy at IDW Disney to generally print the introductory story of a new-to-us character first, rather than just throwing stories at us which take that character for granted. They've done this e.g. with Ellsworth, Belle Duck, Trudy, Duck Avenger.... I think this is a fine approach, and I don't necessarily expect that introductory story to impress me as a stand-alone story.

I understand your concern over the addition of jokes/references in the localization process, The KKM, though I do not share it. Or at least, I'm at a different point on the spectrum from you. And it is a spectrum, of course, not an either/or.

I generally don't like it at all, but I understand it's a different tradition so have built some resistence. But in this specific case, I really do fear it'll be much more exaggerated than normal, since the original material is about 40 pages of dryness. I get the "add the character's story" policy but I'd rather they have waited a year, save some money, and commission someone at Egmont to make a new story resuming her introduction in one or two pages instead.

I think the idea was to reintroduce Ellsworth as part of the regular cast, so that this Crawford Crow lookalike wouldn't take new readers by surprise and to make way for the great Scarpa stories with Ellsworth's nephew Ellroy.

As for "The Miner's Graddaughter", speaking as the translator, I liked it well enough. It serves as an interesting time capsule of weird '60s culture, and gets points from me for being one of the first attempts by another writer to give Scrooge and his backstory some depth. I don't get the "punch it up" charge against us, but I've given up trying to understand it.
