I was thinking...is there any story where Gyro is said to be a relative of the Duck family?
In Johnny Grote's tree, Gyro is Donald's second cousin on his father's (Mr. Coot) side (Though this tree is anything but reliable)
I've also noticed Gus's grandmother, Gretchen Grebe, looks a lot like Gyro (same hair, same beak). Could she be related to the Gearlooses?
Carl Barks had NO intentions, whatsoever, to have Gyro even very distantly related to any of The Ducks. I guess they are somewhat related same as ALL humans on The Earth today are descended from one female's line. As WE Humans are all, at least distantly related, perhaps Gyro is an 1157th cousin of Donald? But. I would guess that if Donald had a son, and Gyro had a daughter, they'd be legally allowed to marry and have children in Calisota.

Robb is correct that most authors do not intend for Gyro to be related to the Ducks at all, simply being a family friend. That being said, it is true that Gretchen Grebe's resemblance to Gyro is very suspicious, and I always wondered if Rosa didn't have an idea in the back of his mind there. But that aside, I do not know any other fully-developed idea than Grote's on how Gyro might be related to the Ducks.
One way one can reintegrate Grote's ideas on the matter, while retaining Gyro as no blood relation of Donald's, is to note that the tree shows Gyro's grandmother on her father's side (Martha Bird per other stories) as the daughter of a man who married Griseldis, the original owner of Daisy's Heirloom Brooch from Bigtop Bedlam as well as Scrooge's mother's sister. All that much can still be true while following most accepted Duck genealogy, excising the idea that this man who marries Griseldis is also the grandfather of Donald.
Hence, Gyro is a sort of distant in-law of Donald through the O'Drakes, and seemingly of Daisy as well.
I much prefer Gyro to be not related to Donald in any way. Why does every character have to be related? It feels forced and unrealistic. Can't Donald have a friend who isn't also a cousin?
While not official, I thought I'd point out that in Gilles Maurice's tree, Gretchen Grebe is a Gearloose on her mother's side. She is Ratchet Gearloose's first cousin. As mentioned before, I don't like that stuff.
One early, unique "next issue" ad in a mid-1950s Danish ANDERS AND & CO described Gyro as Donald's cousin. I remembered being rather stunned. Notably, the idea was not reflected in the actual translation of the Gyro story that appeared in the next issue.

Interesting. Do let me know if you ever find the issue again!

Also, since all living things are descended from the original cell, the ants I was staring at yesterday are my 96744090291093ths cousins.

Umm...thank you, but this is not relevant for the thread at all...?
