At that time, each issue of Picsou would include a special item ("gadget") as an extra to the issue.
This month the editor had decided Picsou would feature a special joke. It was printed to smell bad. The editor insisted: we want this issue to stink as much as possible. But the joke worked too well. Picsou had asked an expert in perfumes (a company renowned for its perfumes and cosmetics), maybe a relative of Pépé le Pew?, who had a "heavy-hand" and... over did it. During printing, the machines stank so much that they had to stop production to clean the plant. It was too late for many copies which were already already delivered. Readers returned their copy to the editors. Some children reportedly vomited when they opened their copy. I remember I had to let mine three weeks in the garden before I could read it.
I remember this vividly. I was at the mall with my father and asked him whether I could buy the newest issue of Picsou Magazine. He said yes, but he really shouldn't have. When I opened this in the car on our way back home, the smell was just unbearable.

By the way, the cover specifies the stench was supposed to be "Garlic and Goat".
Maaan...
Anyway, I am surprised they are already calling 1998 "retro"... time flies by so fast... (you've seen those memes about how many people feel that 20 years ago was the early 90s, when games were still 16-bit...)
