The Glenat publishing house did a great job of publishing many innovative comics, by some of the great french comic community. The goal is to offer something different, something more in the style of "what if Mickey was written in franco-belgian comic". The goal of this thread is to introduce them/discuss them.
I include here a selection some of my favorites. I will include previews with translations, no major spoilers.
I'd love to hear your opinions/reviews as well:
1-Cafe Zombo by Regis Loisel:
This comic follows the style of a Floyd Gottfredson story, what's refreshing is we see a very aggressive and cynical side of Mickey, like some early Gottfredson stories. There are some violent fight scenes which are super fun to read. This edgy Mickey is more fun to read than the more tame Mickey of mainstream stories.
Here are some panels as apetizer:
2-Mickey's craziest adventure by Trondheim & Keramidas: the pitch here is that the authors found a "lost comic book" and included only the preserved pages. A fun concept. It follows Mickey and Donald as they are entangled in some crazy adventure. The "lost comic book" idea lets the authors include only the funniest moments of this adventure, so this books acts as a book of "one-pager gags", snapshots of this adventure. If you love Lewis Trondheim's humour this is for you:
Translation: Mickey "If only you could catch something one day"
Mickey: "Give back Gyro's machine and Scrooge's money !!", Pete: "Hahaha, or what?", (after the beatdown): Mickey: "I've had enough of chasing them around".
3-Donald's happiest adventure: Another book by Trondheim and Keramidas, this book has great philosophical messages about happiness, inserted in one-page gags, Scrooge wants Donald to find the secret of happiness, an adventure that takes him around in all corners of the world including Brutopia:
Donald "Why do you eat 3 plates in one?", president: "Because my people has nothing to eat, and my source of joy is gluttoning on 3 plates in one", Donald "So why don't you eat 9 plates?". President "What a great idea! You should be my new minister of ideas!",
Minister: "He wants you to suffocate by eating too much"
Donald "I didn't do anything! Why is he accusing me?"
Ludwig: "Well he is his minister of ideas".
Other comics! I didn't have time to read them, but include your opinion of their art or their stories if you have read them!
Donald's holiday by Brrémaud & Bertolucci: a lovely book, what's interesting about this one is the art is entirely hand-made by painting:
Horrifikland by Trondheim & Lewis Nemse: some very interesting and intriguing art here, tell me what you think if you have read it!
