Just saw that in December a new series of comics will debut: Darkwing Duck: Justice Ducks about a team led by Darkwing. Written by Roger Langridge, yay! He says two things about his approach: that he’s a lifelong fan of the Barks Ducks, and that he enjoys the goofier offshoots of superhero comics. I’m looking forward to this! Happy that the team includes Neptunia—she’s a personal favorite.
Yep, I'm very interested in this one as well. But I'm a little confused about what Dynamite is doing with the Darkwing Duck license. The main "Darkwing Duck" book ends next month after 10 issues, but we have these two new spinoff series: "Negaduck," which started in September, and "Justice Ducks" in December.
Not gonna lie, I just can't bring myself to get invested in these.
I absolutely love Darkwing, but I still haven't forgiven the massive cliffhanger that the Joe Books series ended off on - and the fact that that's just going to be ignored makes me less inclined to follow these. The fact that they're 'going in a different direction' and leaving out Aaron Sparrow and James Silvani doesn't give me much confidence, either. After all, it didn't exactly work out too well with Ducktales '17.
It's great that Darkwing is back in some capacity, but I've skipped these runs - maybe they're great, maybe they're not. I just can't be bothered.
Resident autistic, diabetic duck fan.
I love hearing about bizarre/obscure Disney works - recommendations welcome!
Hello, I am latching onto this discussion. I am interested in getting Dynamite's Darwing run through collections but I am groping in the dark, finding no news outside of the volumes listed in online stores. I know that a paperback and a hardback with the first 6 stories were supposed to come out soon, however the hardback was postponed until January, and reading above that issue 10 will be the last one of the main series it's strange that they didn't stop at 12, so if they do a second collection it will only be 4 stories. Not knowing Dynamite, could we also expect an omnibus at this point? Thank you very much.
The main reason I haven't got any of the new Disney series from Dynamite is that they went crazy with the cover variants. Super annoying.
I resigned myself back in the Boom days that I wasn't going to collect every cover variant and would just pick my favorite each month (or be happy with whatever my local comic shop had in stock).

The Boom and Joe Books series were great but in a way they didn't feel like 'true' Darkwing, which was not a bad thing, it was just different in a way. Giving Darkwing big, relatively complex, long term arcs full of teasing mysteries to be unveiled is not something the cartoon ever did, so the comic was more like an expansion of the lore going their own way, growing out of the canon.
Dynamite's stories are simpler and less sophisticated but they also feel more like stories the cartoon would have done. There are arcs too, but they have more of a classic Darkwing feeling for better or worse, since they feel less ambitious than Silvani's stories, and arguably cartoons and comics are different media with very different needs (the parallel ways Donald has evolved in cartoons and comics are a great example).

Yes, like you I have scars from the abrupt ending of the Silvani/Sparrow Darkwing series. However, I have very good feelings about Roger Langridge, mostly from his Muppets comics, which were funny, gag-filled, yet also had a heart and showed great respect for the source material of the TV show. So that makes me hopeful about the coming Justice Ducks comics.
Well, I liked Darkwing Duck: Justice Ducks #1! And I am not alone--see the review on Major Spoilers. A fine standalone comic and a good example of all-ages writing, appropriate and fun for kids and also entertaining for grown-ups who remember the series. I particularly appreciate the amount of text per page, more than you usually find these days in comics for kids, closer to a Disney comics standard. And writing that captures the personality of the various characters well. I also enjoyed the heartwarming last page, focusing on the Darkwing/Gosalyn relationship which is the emotional core of the Darkwing Duck series. Roger Langridge did not disappoint me!
