I actually wondered recently - what would be a good English name for him? I thought of things like ... Ronald Rockhard, since his design was supposedly influenced by Ronald Reagan. Or Arnold, because he also resembles Schwarzenegger. Arnold Ronald. Ronald Arnold. Heh. His German name is simply "Steinbeiß", which literally translates as "stone-bite"...

If this turns out to be "Chief Casey's long night", then you guys are in for a treat!

It looks like the name of the author, Sio, was inadvertently left out of the solicitation for the U$ story, which is clearly this one. Possibly it got edited out because "Sio" doesn't look like a name! I'm happy because Daisy gets to go along on a treasure hunt....

And I think the Faraci/Cavazzano story in Showcase must be this one. ..yup, that's "Chief Casey's Long Night".

Yabba-dabba-dabba-doo!  One of THE classic Italian stories from, er, more recent times. And there are many other great stories featuring Brick Boulder (I have to get used to that name). (Hopefully they don't blot out the Blot like it was done in the German version. That was awful. Then again, why should IDW do something so silly?  )

Looks like they changed the DuckTales logo to the classic one. The pre-relase cover on Amazon have new logo.

Does anyone know why IDW prints so many Italian stories and so few Egmont stories? During Gladstone I, Disney, Gladstone II, and Gemstone mostly Egmont stories were used, with a few Italian stories here and there. Perhaps the people in charge at IDW just prefer Italian stories to Egmont stories? While I enjoy some of the Italian stories, I must admit I really miss Egmont 4 panel stories. Is there any chance IDW will start printing more of them?

Well I sure do. I'm just generalizing — there's good and bad on both sides! — but overall Egmont material is blander and more by-the-book… Again I exaggerate, but you've seen ten Donald Egmont ten-pagers, you've kinda seen them all. Italian stories, on the other hand, feature a wider variety of characters, situations, art-styles and genres. Can you imagine someone like Rebo debuting in an Egmont story? Is an Egmont Scrooge's Last Adventure imaginable?

The real question, of course, is why IDW isn't producing original comics at all. I don't mind it that much, but I do wonder why.

I'm sure cost is one reason. It's definitely cheaper to just translate stuff from foreign countries than it is to hire writers and artists to create new material.

Which is sort of funny considering David G. having worked for Egmont for so long... (and before he starts attacking me again: I didn't hate everything Egmont did, not even in the 3 panel stories, which did bring forth a lot of trash though - this simply can't be denied! The 4-panel stories tend to fare better, but I have a feeling that they were better edited.)

This is the Egmont equivalent to Scrooge's Last Adventure: inducks.org/story.php?c=D+2014-131

And you know... it isn't bad at all, but it doesn't achieve nearly the same depth. There have been attempts by Egmont writers to break out of the ordinary every now and then, but often they tend to get confusing or throw the characterization out of the window.

And as for "by-the-book", you can sense that many artists had to adhere to pretty strict "role models" (particularly noticeable when it comes to Mickey), so they didn't really have much of a chance to develop their own style. There are exceptions, of course.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but when the IDW "shake-up" happened (with the cancellation  of the Mickey and Donald books and the addition of Showcase and Donald and Mickey quarterlies), weren't we also told that there would be a new title that would feature Italian material? I don't think that was Showcase, I think it was something in addition? When I read about it, I thought it would translate into more Egmont material in the other titles. I would love to see more Egmont material too, especially Branca and Jippes, but also Milton, etc. That is, more material in the traditional Barks mold.

Personally, I like both. A good story is a good story regardless of where it originates. There is a lot of good Italian material, and a lot of good Egmont material as well. The stories I really like often are the ones from the Netherlands, with the long-billed ducks and the sometimes cynical humor you'd find in Carl Barks' late 40s/early 50s ten pagers.

Mickey Mouse has had good stories from both Italy and Egmont, at least when the editors didn't insist on the creators strictly following the Carl Falberg/Paul Murry formula. There's a fantastic run of Egmont Mickeys where the writers and artists were bringing in a lot of the Gottfredson characters.

I thought that the title featuring Italian material was/is Showcase.

The Egmont stories I'd most like to see in IDW include: many Korhonen (I could list at least eight), an equal number of Rota-drawn stories, written by him or by the McGreals, Lars Jensen's Zantaf stories, a couple stories each by Janet Gilbert, Per Hedman and the Shaws.

I often enjoy reading the Italian stories, but the IDW-printed stories that have so far made it into my permanent Duck headcanon are mostly Egmont stories (I can think of at least five). Italian stories (one each Panaro, Scarpa and Cimino) from IDW that are now headcanon just edge out the Dutch stories (Kruse, de Graaff & Heymans), even though lots more Italian stories have been published than Dutch stories. It's still rare for contemporary Italian stories to attain reality in my mental Duckworld. There are perhaps six or seven Italian stories not yet printed in English that are in my headcanon, and only half of those are at all recent. (Though that does include one by Stabile, and I have high expectations for the new one by him that's coming ANY MONTH NOW.) This may be as much about art as it is about writing. Plenty of fine art in the Italian stories, but much of it is not to my personal taste.
