According to Don Rosa's The Life and Times of $crooge McDuck, Scrooge earns his #1 Dime in 1877.
Now, at first glance, this is just because that makes him ten years old at this point, a nice, round number, if you work from the 1867 date which Rosa chose in part because that would make Scrooge exactly 100 when he dies in 1967, a date Don Rosa chose because that's when Barks stopped drawing new Scrooge stories. (…phew! that was a mouthful)
However, I'm now wondering if history-buff-Rosa didn't conspire with comic-artist-Rosa on this one for an additional easter egg. Because Cornelius Vanderbilt died in 1877, and was, up until then, the richest man in the U.S.A. How fitting that his future successor in the title would get his business start that day?
I have the feeling that if Don Rosa had intended that, he would already have said so when he wrote his notes for "The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck". He is quite the history and trivia buff.
