There are several stories whose plot I didn't really get when I read them as a little child and had to reread years later, as an adult,
to understand what was going on. However, in this story's case, even rereading it as an adult (I was 9 the first time I read it) didn't
do me much good.
It rains everyday in Duckburg, despite it's summer. The reason, as it turns out, is Scrooge McDuck, who attracts clouds and thunders
because he has a lot of money! If I got the scientists' explanations right (when I reread the story as an adult), his financial status
has created a powerful magnetic field around him and, as a result, all thunders strike him. Yeah, I know, zero sense. How do physics
'know' about Scrooge's financial status?
In any case, Scrooge has to either give away a large amount of money in order to lower his financial status or abandon Duckburg.
Gyro advises him to go live in a desert for a while until the magnetic field around him weakens. I have no idea how this is supposed
to work; I mean, if we accept that nature 'knows' about Scrooge's fortune, how will him going to the desert help? But if Gyro says
it will help, let's just agree, so that we can finish reading this story and move on with our lives.
For a long time, it rains everyday in the part of the desert where Scrooge temporarily resides (our adorable tycoon uses a cage as
a shield to protect himself from further electric shocks). As a result, it turns into a green place. Eventually, Scrooge stops attracting
clouds and can now go back to his money. Of course, he is delighted.
However, an indian that came out of nowhere for plot reasons has some concerns. Now that Scrooge will go back to Duckburg, the
green place will turn into a desert again (since it doesn't rain there anymore), thus disrupting ecological balance. I don't have the
slightest idea how a place that had always been a desert going back to being a desert is supposed to disrupt eco balance, but, hey,
as if anything else in this story makes sense.
Ecologists in Duckburg go on a protest, pressing the mayor to take measures. Scrooge is forced by the authorities to pay for the
watering of the green part of the desert every month, for the rest of his life (or until the reset button technique has erased all
those events by the beginning of the next story).
All in all, this story is a bunch of random, nonsense elements that were seemingly thrown together at the last minute. Barely
above average.
