This time, I'm going to review one of the stories where Witch Hazel and Goofy form a comical duo, entertaining the audience in a way only those two together can. I wish there were more stories of this kind.
In the Land of Witches, where Hazel lives, a beauty contest is announced. Every single witch in the land participates. (Those women have a lot of free time.)
Since all witches take part, there can be no panel. So, it is decided that the winner will be decided through a secret ballot, each witch voting for the one she believes deserves the title. When I first read that story (I was 10), as soon as I reached that point, I innocently wondered, 'But, won't every witch vote for herself this way?'
And indeed, in the very next page, it turned out I was true, since all witches voted for themselves. Over the following months, the ballot kept being repeated every week, with the same result every time. (Have I mentioned those old ladies have way too much free time?)
Eventually, Hazel has an idea. A man from Earth shall be chosen to be taken to the Land of Witches and be the jury. Since Hazel was the one who had that idea, she has the honor of also being the one to go to find a man. Guess who, of all males on Earth, accepts to undertake that task. That's right, Goofy! I mean, who else could it be? If a witch descended from the sky riding a broom and asked you to come with her to a land inhabited by freaky creatures and be the judge in a beauty contest where all participants look like what was left of a meth addict after she was run over by a bus, would you accept if you didn't have Goofy's mindset?
Anyway, after a series of comical events, Hazel wins. Not because she was the preetiest of course, but let her believe otherwise; what she doesn't know won't hurt her (wink, wink).
A little masterpiece that still keeps my heart warm on winter nights.
