Btw, I think Inducks' term "Which way-stories" is better and more descriptive than "What if-stories", which to me has very different connotations.
This is true, but the story in question is both a "which way" as well as a "what if", which makes it interesting. It mostly tells the story of Duck Avenger's origins and how the story could've developed differently if certain things had not happened, or happened differently. This kind of re-exploration of a familiar theme is pretty rare.
We call those stories "storie a bivi" in Italy, which means "crossroads stories". I loved them when I was a kid; I still own this book which collects several stories of the kind. inducks.org/issue.php?c=it%2FTD+++33#s

Ah, so it's actually both. Interesting, not sure if I've heard of a story like that before.

They're very common with superhero stories, DC had a long tradition of "imaginary stories" and Marvel had an actual line of books called "What If?" entirely devoted to these.
If you were to write a What If story, what hypothetical would you like to explore?
Many that I can think of probably wouldn't get past Disney's "portrayal of characters" standards. Nothing crazy, but I've been thinking of a Disney animated canon multiverse crossover, and most meet-ups would involve the aging-up of some of the cast in order to meet others. Disney isn't keen on that; I mean, just how often has Pinocchio been portrayed in his "real boy" form these past 80 years?

Oh, I didn't mean to say I've never heard of 'what if'-stories. What I mean is I don't think I've heard of a 'Which way'-story which is also a 'What if'-story before this one with the Duck Avenger.
Even the "what if" is relatively rare in Disney, although there are certainly examples.
Not sure if Stabile intended this (we really need him on this forum, don't you think?) but the endings in which Donald does not become the Duck Avenger could also explain why there are so many stories in which this obviously never happened - lots of things in which Donald can't take revenge on anybody, or where he sells his 313...
