I had a friend of mine forward me a post from Facebook today talking about a book called Disney Comics Around the World in 100 Years. It seems Fantagraphics did a stealth drop today on a book I hadn’t heard of as part of Disney’s 100th celebration. I can’t find information on this book. The bad news is that it’s available only at Target and only in-store as it’s not on their website or app. I was able to snag the only copy at my store after some work by the employees as it wasn’t on the shelf. It retails at $100 but is 30% off plus Target has a 20% off books this week if using Target Circle and 5% off that for a total around $56.
As for the book it’s 256 pages and has dimensions the same as the Scrooge: Diamond Jubilee collection. It has really nice end papers and nice color pages containing stories with Donald, Scrooge, Mickey, Bucky Bug, Goofy, The Seven Dwarfs, Jose Carioca, Lilo and Stitch, Recess, and more. Stories come from various countries including the US, Britain. Brazil, Yugoslavia, and more and are written or drawn by such stalwarts as Barks, Rosa, Walt, Gottfredson, Scarpa, Murry, Kinney, Milton, Jippes, and more.
Stories are broken up by era and each has a one page preview written by David Gerstein and a few others. The first section is 1923-1932 and contains an excerpt from Lost on a Desert Island plus Ear! Ear!, A Fudge Cake Exquisite to See, and Low Diver. There are 9 era’s in all. The last section covers 2013-2022 and includes the Ducktales story Spies Like Us and Mickey’s The World Under the Sea. The only section I felt was really underrepresented was 1953-1962 which only has a Seven Dwarfs story by Scarpa from Topolino. I also wish it had contained newspaper strip stories of Uncle Remus and Winnie the Pooh though that first one wasn’t happening.
Like most of Fantagraphics books this book is beautiful and I would highly recommend if you are interested, that you check your local Target and see if you can secure a copy this week. For those who don’t have one nearby or are out of country this might be hard to find unless they eventually put it on their website. If you have any questions let me know and I’ll do my best to answer them.
