Are you sure it's a Fantagraphics book? If so, pretty weird that it's a Target exclusive.
I'm sure! Target approached us and Disney after seeing some of our other oversized collections, wanting something similar keyed to the Disney centennial, exclusively for themselves.
We were already planning a Disney centennial book, so turning it into their project was simple.

I finally got mine under the Christmas tree, it's really a terrific collection.

It was commissioned by Target as an exclusive item in their stores.

Which means that they wouldn't even have bothered with an anniversary book if Target hadn't commisioned it...

Editor here. As I made clear upthread, we were already at work on the book when Target came calling. It retroactively became their project.
How committed are we? I actually proposed this book to Fantagraphics in 2009, at which point it would have been a retrospective keyed to the 80th anniversary of Disney comics proper (2010). Here's a rough cover design I prepared as part of the pitch:
But heavy work on the Gottfredson Library prevented it from happening right away. Then a plan to produce it for 2020 hit setbacks due to Covid. Luckily, there was a magnificent, appropriate anniversary in 2023 for which it fit perfectly (...and the wait gave us a really nice Casty Mickey story to finish off the book with, first published in 2022).
I daresay designer Justin Allan-Spencer had a much nicer final cover design than my rough!
(In between, by the way, in 2012, Boom published this book on which I also worked—which had another cover inspired loosely by the same concept.)
Ramapith Btw, even though it's 7 years away, I do wonder what books and even more importantly, new comics editors around the world will come up with for the 100th anniversary of Disney comics.
