Hi there,
I’m a Disney Comics fan who has never watched a full episode of either incarnation of DuckTales. That is, until yesterday, when I started watching the first season of the original DuckTales on Disney+. A few thoughts popped into my head and I wrote them down, which gave me the idea of writing a short review for every episode. I will post them in this thread if nobody minds.
When I wrote about the first episode, a paragraph spiralled out of control to the point that it doesn’t fit into the review anymore:
„There is something improbably symmetric about both ‚DuckTales‘ season 1 and ‚The Son of the Sun‘ being released in 1987. Forty years after the creation of Scrooge McDuck and twenty years after Carl Barks laid down his drawing pen, two very different artistic projects - both headed by a babyboomer born around 1950 - simultaneously embark on a journey to breathe new life into Duckburg. Both would be unthinkable without Barks, but the ways they continue his legacy stand in stark contrast to each other. Both will be remembered as being at the height of their cultural relevance in the 1990s: Don Rosa because he reaches his artistic peak in that decade, DuckTales because of its frequent reruns that make it a beloved memory for many 90s kids. Rosa’s main audience will be European, DuckTales will be watched mostly by Americans – or more to the point, it will be watched on both sides of the pond, but it will not change the fact that for Europeans, Duckburg is first and foremost located on the (drawn) page, not the screen. Whereas in the US, there are more people alive today who have been introduced to Scrooge and his money bin through their TV than people who have first laid eyes on them in a comicbook.“
It reads like it could be the beginning of an essay, but as of now, I have nothing interesting to follow it up with.
Anyway, my review of episode 1 will be posted here soon. Replies are always welcome.
