Message for those in the USA: The comics for this year's Halloween Comicfest have been announced, and there will this year be an ashcan Donald Duck. (2015 there was a full-size Donald Duck, last year there was no IDW Disney Comicfest comic.) I'm very pleased to see that, since I use the Halloween Comicfest ashcans (as they are intended) as treats for trick-or-treaters. You buy them in packs (last year these were 25 mini-comics for $5) from your local comic store. The key thing is, you need to order them in summer. They will arrive around early October. My experience with using these as treats is very positive. I've never had a kid be upset--they get plenty of candy, and a mini-comic counts as an acceptable alternative treat. Most kids are happier than they would be if I gave them another little candy bar.
Go to the "halloweencomicfest.com" website and check out the options. The full-size comics will be giveaways at the stores, like the freebies on Free Comic Book Day in May. The mini-comics are ashcan-sized, and those are the ones you'll be able to order in packs, in the next couple of months. So far they only have the cover pictures; soon they'll have a "catalog" page which will say something about the contents of each comic.
This year, of course, y'all should get the Donald Duck mini-comics for use as treats. In years when there is no Disney option, my main piece of advice is to try to pick comics which will have a complete story, since if I were a trick-or-treating kid I'd be annoyed to get a comic with just a teaser. The Disney mini-comics have always had complete stories. Archie does, too. With the others it can be hard to tell from the catalog. In general, you probably want to avoid the minis that come from a graphic novel (this year: Witch Boy, Stitched, etc.), since those are almost certain to be excerpts and not complete stories. I've had better luck in getting complete stories with minis that come from ongoing comic book series. The BOOM mini has been *very* short things from several of their ongoing comics, so also not very satisfactory, story-wise.
Can't wait to find out what story the Donald Duck mini will have this year!
