Today I'd like to ask you all a question that I've probably had since I first read "The Invader of Fort Duckburg" by Don Rosa. In said story, which takes place in 1902, a young Grandma Duck, who is not yet a grandmother, it seems, and goes by Ma, tells Scrooge, "I own most all land hereabouts!" In Rosa lore, as mentioned in "The Invader of Fort Duckburg", "W.H.A.D.A.L.O.T.T.A.J.A.R.G.O.N.", and his Duck family tree, Grandma is the granddaughter of Cornelius Coot, the founder of Duckburg. I assume this is the part of the reason that she said she owns almost all the land around Fort Duckburg, though I can't say that explanation makes perfect sense to me. I'm probably missing something very obvious here, but I don't understand how she could own nearly all the land around Fort Duckburg unless everyone else in her family was dead and she was the sole heir.
This brings me to my core question: What happened to her parents (Clinton Coot and Gertrude Gadwall according to Rosa lore)? We know from "The Invader of Fort Duckburg" that Clinton was alive recently enough to have founded the Junior Woodchucks, which it seems, is still new enough to only have three members. At the same time, Grandma's line about owning nearly all the land and the look that I interpret to be sad in her eyes when she tells Scrooge about Clinton and the Junior Woodchucks leads me to think that he is dead, and may have died recently. Of course, this is impossible if one counts The Legend of the Three Caballeros as canon to Rosa's lore, which I don't.
Even if you do take The Legend of the Three Caballeros as canon to the rest of the Duck universe, what about Gertrude? When did she die?
According to this article, Grandma's mother was mentioned in some story where she inherits a cake recipe from her. The exact line is, "Grandma’s father was a farmer, and her mother was probably a sister of Scrooge’s mother, because Grandma once inherited a recipe from her mother, which just as well could have been Scrooge’s (AA 2/1969) - and Ludwig von Drake’s." That line doesn't make a lot of sense to me. I tried to find the story through the power of I.N.D.U.C.K.S., and I believe it is this one, though the English description doesn't give any new info about what the story specifically says about Grandma's mother.
I was browsing through xanderares's blog again, and it seems that one story indicates that Grandma grew up on a farm with her grandma (full blog post here: generationduck.blogspot.com/2018/12/quando-nonna-papera-era-fidanzata-con.html). This would seem to indicate that both of her parents died during her childhood.
Ultimately, here's what I came up with (note that this does disregard The Legend of the Three Caballeros): Gertrude died at some point when Grandma was a child. Clinton was always busy with things like Coot University. I imagine he may have also been some sort of politician. Due to his busy schedule, Grandma oftentimes stayed with her maternal grandparents (I'm assuming it was her maternal grandmother in the story reviewed on Xanderares's blog) and was practically raised by them. Since I don't see her maternal grandfather in the panels Xanderares showed on his blog, I will assume he died sometime before those segments of that story took place. I'd wager Clinton died about 1901 or 1902, just shortly after founding the Junior Woodchucks and just shortly before "The Invader of Fort Duckburg."
Does anyone know what Rosa's thoughts were on when Clinton and Gertrude died and on how Grandma could supposedly own almost the land around/in Duckburg in 1902? I think I've seen it floating around on the Internet that Clinton died in 1910, but I'm not sure if this something Rosa has said anywhere or not.
Finally, what's your opinion on anything and everything I've just mentioned? What do you think happened to Clinton and Gertrude? Who do you think raised Grandma? How exactly was Grandma able to own almost all the land around/in Duckburg? Honestly, the answer to the last one is probably very obvious, but I'm just confused.
Thanks in advance, and I apologize for the excruciatingly long and incoherent post.
