>Bots can't spam a forum not accepting new posts, correct?
They will try to, because they would think it's open (not many fora are read-only). The trouble is, after a few days, they will attempt to create many accounts every minute, slowing down everything.
When I have some time, I think I'll try to generate one or several CSVtext files with most posts that I can upload somewhere. I'll see what I can do with the tags used in forum posts (for bold texts etc.).
Wasn't there a Rota sequel to "Shrinking Ducks" or whatever it's called?
Rota (with Halas) wrote "The Incredible Shrinking Duck", but it's not a sequel to any Barks story. Has elements reminiscent of "Micro-Ducks" and "Voodoo Hoodoo", but that's it, as far as I'm aware.

I believe the Barks story that Spectrus was thinking of must have been The Dime in the Hole (to which Rosa also gave a sequel with The Incredible Shrinking Tightwad, of course).

And which Rota story is here proposed as a sequel to "Billions in the Hole"? Are we talking about "The Incredible Shrinking Duck"? I'm going to have to read them both again.... Inducks doesn't make the connection.
Thanks! I'll have to look for that--I might actually like it. I know I wouldn't like the Gervasio story, because it's a Fantomius story, and I wouldn't want all the superhero stuff taking over one of my favorite Barks stories ever.
As I understand it, that's precisely cacou's problem — he's got all the files that, if put back on the Internet right now, would restore the Forum as it once was, but no easy way to make it anything else than a forum.
I understand that (and again I hesitate to belabor the point since I have never run a forum before and hate to make suggestions about something I have such little knowledge of), but if you restore the forum as it was, and lock it to new posts and users (such a setting would be a basic option for any forum, I imagine) wouldn't it solve the bot problem? The bot problem is only relevant for an active forum with new posts, isn't it? Bots can't spam a forum not accepting new posts, correct?
Correct, but you will still get many bots trying to register in order to post messages. When I hosted DCF, I had several thousands of them every minute. They will not be able to register, but they will still try to (sending HTTP requests). I think I'll just restore the SQL tables and generate a big CSV text file with user/data/message. Give me a few more weeks to do that.

Anything you can do to bring back that wealth of discussion is much appreciated ... thanks so much for taking the time and effort.

Fantomius is not a superhero... and Gervasio is a brilliant writer!

OK, my bad, the cape misled me. And no offense to Gervasio--I just suspect that I would not like a prequel/sequel to Barks' Notre Duck that used the characters of a whole Duck-narrative with which I am unfamiliar and which is unlikely to feel real to me (as PK does not attain reality in my Duckworld). In order to like the story, I'd first have to get familiar with the whole Fantomius narrative, and then I'd have to accept it as "real" history in my Duckworld, and neither of those two things is likely to happen. But I'm glad if it works for other readers!

To be honest, Gervasio honestly achieves as convincing a blend of the 60's-Duck-Avenger lore and Don Rosa canon as could possibly be achieved. The stories' chronology fits with the Life and Times timeline, tie-ins to not-yet-Rosa-expounded Barksian facts (like the Phantom and the Mad Duke of Duckburg) abound, etc. And to be honest, the whole Fantomius narrative is only distantly related to the Duck Avenger when just reading the stories; you can just pretty much accept it as its own period series taking place in the 1920's. It's also a lot like Rosa in other ways; it's based on (and filled with) 1920's/1930's mystery novel lore, from Arsène Lupin to Agatha Christie with the occasional Conan Doyle thrown in. To this, add a bit of The Shadow mixed with Diabolik, just a dash of Lemony Snicket, and you've got a highly entertaining series.

You're right - I'm now remembering elements from that Rota story. And I tend to get confused with titles (The Incredible Shrinking Tightwad has two different German titles). But I still have this feeling that there was another story involving the contraption from Barks' original story. William Van Horn? Probably not, though he ALSO did a "shrinking" story. Argh!
