fredj When I looked at the page gallopinggeargrinder mentioned above, that was the panel that really stood out to me too.
My eyes were first drawn to Donald, which is why I thought it was just the clean up that made it look odd, but something has clearly been done to the kids.
The reason ALL the beaks and The Nephews' faces (eyes and beaks) look so terribly drawn is that the inker had a shaky hand, like he was drunk. That made the lines of the beaks and eyes wobbly, when they need to have unwavering curved lines. The wobbly lines on The Boys make their expressions show extreme age and agitation, rather than concern. And their eyes are drawn with pointed tops, rather than keeping perfect ovals, and they are also drawn at incorrect angles, making them appear very unnatural, as if they were insane. Barks' Donald looks very self-satisfied, while the new inker's Donald's beak line wavers, making him not so sure that he's satisfied. It's all simply unacceptable. It is much, much, much worse that Dick Flottes' re-inked pages in "Race To The South Seas", so much so, that by comparison, one might think the latter was a good job.
I don't understand why Fantagraphics can't restore certain panels from the original comic book editions if no other original source exists. Wouldn't look as good as real proofs, but infinitely better than this mess.

Sorry, but for me this is much much worse than the censorship in Under the Polar ice.. I thought all the original proofs exept a few still exist and that they would use them?
I wasn't involved with this particular story—but this page looked this way in Another Rainbow's Carl Barks Library and Carl Barks Library in Color, too.
Hamilton was unable to get a proof for this page in the 1980s, so (awkwardly) reinked it. The Fanta books' default is to reuse the Hamilton versions, so here that's what happened.
I'd meant to inform my Fanta colleagues, but accidentally didn't. I'll obviously talk to them before they do a second printing. (I'm not the Barks editor, but I do help them sometimes; for instance, I caught this book's title story "Balloonatics," which had a traced page that we replaced with the true Barks version.)

For what it's worth, the recent German edition (just reprinted a few weeks ago) looks fine.
My God, this is unforgivable! How is is possible that the Dutch version in the 'Donald Duck' weekly magazine from the 70's is better than this? I wonder how it's in the Dutch 'Beste Verhalen' No. 20 from 1981, which is at my parents house.

So that's where they got their source from. Just like 'Race to the South Seas' the real Barks' version will never see the light of day in the Fantagraphics series (vol. 7). I remember somebody here in this topic telling the the info at the end of the book isn't right: the Barks original was recovered but wasn't actually printed in the Fantagraphics book.
What a SnAFU again.

Thanks! I read over that. So the BV is okay too. They should have consulted the Dutch then.

When do you think a second printing would be available?
Generally, it would be interesting to know if there are any significant differences between the different printings of some of the volumes.
I have both the first and third printing of Vol 7 "Donald Duck: Lost in the Andes". Both have the same version of Race to the South Seas!, and the error in the story notes about this story is still present in the 3rd printing.

Lost in the Andes have three printings already?? I thought there were only two.

Probably have more. The 3rd printing is dated November 2014, and my copy came in the box set (didn't know they were doing box sets when I bought the 1st printing). The box sets usually have later printings of the books.

I don't think they'll replace that story in a 2nd printing. They didn't with 'Race to the South Seas' of which they in the mean time do have the proper Barks version (instead of the Jippes version).
