The "ultimate" Duck family tree

Hi. The last few weeks, I've spent some of my spare time building a Duck family tree that includes relatives from every media. The goal is basically to do an "improved" and up-to-date version of Gilles Maurice's tree. When I first discovered Maurice's tree back in 2008, it was the most fascinating thing I had ever seen. But as time passed, I realized that Maurice made a few mistakes in his tree, and also that he left some characters out. My tree attempts to fix these things.
(Although, my tree only features characters going back to around the year 1700. It would be possible to go back even further, but at that point, the genealogical information gets even more vague. I'll leave that to someone else.)

However, I do not have access to a lot of the stories the many relatives in my tree originate from. Therefore, I may very well have made some mistakes too. If you find any mistakes in my tree, please point them out and we'll discuss alternatives. I'll try to update the tree as soon as possible.

The placements of the characters are based on information compiled from various sources, including Wikis, the Generation Duck blog, Asger Pedersen's Ande-Aner article, INDUCKS, Scroogerello's Gander tree, Gilles Maurice's original tree, and my own research.
Yet, I'm sure there are characters that I've missed. If you notice that someone is missing, please tell us about them in the thread.

This is fantastic - the work you've put in is incredible!

One comment I feel compelled to make is that it's very clear - the presentation leaves little room for confusion. In a lot of trees, I find myself struggling to understand things, or how characters are supposed to be related. This tree is so easy to read, which is a blessing.

Also, the scans you've chosen are great.
Not all pulled from the one source, they give a little bit of the character's flair when possible... it's a nice bit of attention to detail that I think goes a long way when making something like this!

I'm guessing that getting sources on each of the family members would be a Herculean task, given the variety of sources, but it'd be interesting to hear more specifics on where you got certain characters from! I'm unfamiliar with the vast majority of them, but it's interesting to see how expansive the Gearloose family is, or seeing characters that are, I assume, from comics that I've yet to read.
That being said, there was one in particular I was wondering about - Miranda, who's with Cornelius Coot. What story is she from?
Then there's Waldo, Abigail and Amelia... are they the ones from The Aristocats? Is there something concrete that ties them in? I was very confused to see them on there!

I think that your decision not to go past 1700 is a very wise one.
That's usually the point where these trees get ruined; the distance is hard to properly encapsulate, and the way it's usually done ends up with them mushing everyone too close together.

All in all, it's a phenomenal work - the sheer amount of research that must have went into it is amazing.
Apologies for not having much to offer in the way of actual critiques or the like - I have nothing but praise for it, honestly.

Most of the Gearloose-family tree is based off of Xander Ares' theories on his Generation Duck blog. He's also the one who noted the O'Fly-connection between Daisy's and Gyro's families. About Waldo and his nieces: Gilles Maurice included a random goose from a Mickey Mouse Works-episode as Socrates Gosling's father. I didn't like that; there's nothing indicating that this guy is related to the Ducks or Socrates. However, I then learned that there's an episode of House of Mouse where Donald is seen in a photo of the Goose family reunion. Uncle Waldo is also in the picture, meaning that he is somehow related to the Goose family. This was perfect! ...The only problem is of course that The Aristocats takes place in 1910... but he's still in the picture with Donald, so I guess it doesn't matter.


Oh yeah, and about John Quackett: I've honestly not read a single story with the character. I mean, I know he was the original alter-ego of the Duck Avenger in the 1920s, but that's all I know. That being said - I very much doubt there's an intentional Hitler-connection. I'm certain he's just supposed to look like a 1920s-fellow.

Still bizarre to imagine Waldo as a relation of the Ducks, but that's House of Mouse I suppose

I come back essentially on a whim for the first time in a long time due to being in the mood for goofy stuff like Disney comics as the quacking plague winds down, and to my unimaginable delight I find this! You are a worthy successor, nay, SURPASSOR, to Gilles Maurice. You did indeed find some errors, or what I think were errors, in Gilles' tree - I like that you moved Alex Gearloose ahead (he's supposed to be a contemporary of Edison, who stole the idea for the lightbulb from him, yet Gilles' tree had him earlier than Socrates, who was in the pioneer era and thus probably lived around the same time as Cornelius Coot), and you dropped non-marriage romantic relationships; Gilles including those was always odd to me. And is that the scan of the infamous Aunt Audree I found after Gilles himself told me what issue she was in? Touched if so!

I'll be watching this like a hawk (any of those related to Donald?) to see if and how this develops further. Did you make any annotations as to who debuted where and such? Would be honored to see them if so! Huh. Was my own familyecho tree from a few years ago one of those sources, or did we independently come up with these similar ideas of how to deal with Eider and McPaperduck? 

Either way, this is a spectacular piece of work, I have to say. I don't agree with everything here, of course; including things I don't expect to change your mind about, such as how ‘Grandpa Duck’ from No Hunting is still Humperdink to me, etc.

Also, most strikingly, while it's true that some of these competing Scrooge ancestors can harmlessly be reckoned to have been something else than McDucks, it's very very weird to do that with Silas McDuck, who seems to have been nothing less than the Head of Clan McDuck at the time of the flashback depicted in the DuckTales episode where he appears. Personally, I'd be more comfortable with making him a g-…-great-uncle rather than direct ancestor, but keeping him as a McDuck, than the opposite solution that makes him a Mallard. 

Also, what's this business of Zak McWak being HDL's father's brother? Wouldn't that suggest their names should be Huey, Dewey and Louie McWak? Unless you're going with HDL having been born out of wedlock, I supposed. Either way, I'm stickin' with him being Daisy's brother, sorry. 

One thing you have overlooked, and which I have been giving a lot of thought to, is the possibility of an American line of McDucks descended from Seafoam at Fort Drakeborough after he left Scotland for the final time. That is where I would place Jean-Claude McDuck (and perhaps Pokerface McDuck). There's a Luciano Bottaro story with a nameless McDuck Ancestor who apparently resided around Calisota in the 17th century, who would fit right in with this lineage; I can't see if you put him anywhere on your tree…? He looks like Scrooge but wears a pilgrim hat.

Oh, and I really, really cannot condone putting Ludwig von Drake's DuckTales 2017 children on there. That's a wholly different universe, dammit! “Our” Ludwig never had any such children, only his counterpart in an alternate dimension did. 

Still, very good stuff. The only other “missing characters” I can see are things I guess you made a principled decision of overlooking — characters original to Erika Fuchs's translations, for example, as depicted in Grote's tree, which I always took more seriously than most. 

Glomgold and Quagmire's relatives leading up to Bogey McDivot were given names by the writer of the story in interviews, also; it's all on the $crooge McDuck Wiki. You might want to add them where relevant.

Great job! I personally don’t like the idea of Gyro, Glomgold, Rockerduck, etc. all being related to the Ducks, but I know there’s some stories that say they are.  
Are you planning to put *every* relative on the tree, or are you making a selection? In case it’s the first, here’s a few missing that I know of:

- Scrooge’s uncle (in the Dutch translation he’s named Schraalhans). He is much stingier than
Scrooge, whom he sees as a terrible spendthrift (which is the same basic characterizations behind Scrooge’s cousins Bruce and Douglas— maybe he’s their dad.)

You may have noticed a few empty portrait-boxes. Those are characters that I need scans of. If you have access to a scan of any of those characters, please send one to me.

Finally, over the years there have been several characters claiming the title of "Scrooge's great-grandfather", for example. Silas Elias, Pampero, "Wasteful" Scrooge, Potluck, and so on. Obviously, not all of these can be McDucks (unless there's an uncomfortable amount of inbreeding in the family). But I wish to include as many characters as possible. In these cases, the important thing is that they are an ancestor of Scrooge or Donald - not necessarily that they are named McDuck. Therefore, I've taken a few minor artistic liberties here and there, and changed the last names of some of these "problematic" characters. For example, "Silas Elias Mallard" was originally a Duck, while his father "Silas Mallard" was originally a McDuck.

Great Job, LP, this is a fair improvement of Gilles' tree!

I haven't had the time to look at it deeply yet, but some things are not really precise, first two I can see: Nathaniel Rockerduck is the name of RKD's uncle, not nephew; Elias Coot (Casey's cousin) refers to Cornelius as his uncle, not grandfather. Some relatives are missing as well (have a look at my thread Duck family trees).

First of all, those are some very kind words. I appreciate them immensely! It's good to know that my efforts are appreciated by someone else who share the same interest in this!

Second of all, I suspect Gilles made the Gearloose-mistakes due to a lack of information of the relevant stories, a translation error, or maybe some simple miscommunication. I hope having an ongoing discussion about the tree-construction like this on a forum will minimize those problems. I intend to update the tree as soon as I'm convinced that an aspect of its current state is an error. 

Third of all, I do understand Gilles wanting to include romantic partners, such as Goldie, Brigitta, and Fethry's Gloria. Those are important and established enough to deserve inclusion. However, where do you draw the line? Should you include every girl that Gladstone has ever dated? Every girl that Huey, Dewey, and Louie has ever had a crush on? I don't know, but in the end I elected to only go with blood-relatives and marriages.

Fourth of all, yes - you and your thread were indeed very helpful in my making of the tree! So thanks! Maybe you could help me identify the stories that the non-pictured characters in my tree come from? I hope to eventually put a face to each character! (And I'd rather not just copy-paste the cropped images from Gilles' tree!)

Fifth of all, a table like Gilles' would indeed be useful! I, however, did not do one of those (although I wish I would! They are so organized and elegant!). But I should at least be able to track down each character I've placed on the tree that has an image attached to them. They all come from one of the sources I listed in my original post. Also, the link you linked was posted in the 'Mystery Ducks'-thread you mentioned, so I'm already familiar with it! It was very helpful when I made this tree!

I do have a link to a FamilyEcho-tree saved in my Duck tree folder. However, I don't think I ended up using any ideas from it, so I didn't credit it.
I thought that tree I have saved might be actually be yours, but looking at it now, Eider and McPaperduck are both listed as siblings to John D. Rockerduck's mother. In my tree, Eider and Rockerduck's mother are first cousins, and I have McPaperduck as Eider's father and only related to Rockerduck's mother via marriage.

As you expected, my mind remains unchanged about merging Humperdink and the No Hunting-Grandpappy. I believe we've already discussed this in some other thread. I don't think there's anything suggesting that Grandpappy is in fact Donald's father's father, yet at least one source (Giovan Battista Carpi's Duck tree) suggests that the two are separate.

Your argument about Silas McDuck is a valid one, however! I was hesitant about that one myself! However, Silas is actually stated to be Scrooge's great-great-grandfather. Potcrack McDuck on the other hand is simply mentioned to be a McDuck that exists in that timeframe. (To be honest, the only reason I put Potcrack as Scrooge's g-g-grandfather rather than Silas is that I'm biased towards Rosa... and also, I'm biased against DuckTales, since that's pretty much separate from the comics anyways. I'm trying to be as objective as possible with this tree, so the best course of action here is probably to make Potcrack a g-g-granduncle and give his position as g-g-grandfather to Silas!

About Zak McWak: This is once again me not being objective enough. It's pretty much based on the idea that the nephews' father is a deadbeat who left Della alone with the kids early enough that they kept her surname instead. However, that's pretty much just head-canon and not supported by anything. Also, the father had to have been around for the nephews to shoot fireworks under his chair, so... I guess that doesn't work.
Zak McWak's story has the nephews name Zak as their favorite uncle, making Donald jealous. I rationalized that they really meant "uncle" here, and not something like "second cousin once removed". However, there's nothing backing up that either.
I am however hesitant to putting Zak as Daisy's brother. That would mean that Daisy truly is the nephews' aunt, and that their father is Daisy's brother. I don't think that has been confirmed at all. I think it's just based on a suggestion from Don Rosa. If I recall correctly, someone established in another thread around here that Carl Barks' HDL never referred to Daisy as "Aunt", meaning that Rosa's suggestion is based on misinformation anyways. If any of this is wrong, please tell me.

The American McDuck-line you mention is interesting. Worth noting however, is that Seafoam was confirmed to be Scrooge's g-g-g-grandfather in one of the Life and Times of $crooge McDuck chapters. He was also born around 1710, meaning that the pilgrim hat-McDuck would, as you said, have been around earlier than Seafoam. I did another thread about McDuck ancestors, going back further than this tree. I featured the pilgrim hat-man there!
I'll have to look into the Jean-Claude situation a bit further before I'll make any changes.

Pokerface is one of the hardest characters to place. I'd love some more suggestions for alternate placements of him!

I agree that the DuckTales 2017-continuity is it's own thing (I'd even say the 80s version is in it's own universe!). However, I wanted to be thorough and include everything from every continuity. I have comics-only relatives, Silas McDuck from 80s-DuckTales, Mel Mallard from Quack Pack, Gertie Goose from that cartoon-movie, and so on. Ludwig's offspring from 2017-DuckTales are no exception. I should clarify that this massive all-encompassing tree does not represent my own personal head-canon. I've made another tree for that purpose in the past.

Erika Fuchs's made up relatives are on the fence for me. But in the end I elected to regard them as mistranslations, as harsh as that may sound.

I was vary of the $crooge McDuck Wiki, as it doesn't play by the same rules as me. It's often hard to make out what is a fan-made name for a character and what is official.
Still, that Bogey McDivot article might be worth a read.

I don't like them being related either! That's definitely not in my personal head-canon. However, I'm trying to disregard my own preferences and just take every story as truth. I'm indeed hoping to put every relative on the tree. Even those from the cartoons. 

I appreciate the list! I'll look through it more closely in the following days! Do you have any scans of these relatives? And preferably, their names too?

I haven't had the time to look at it deeply yet, but some things are not really precise, first two I can see: Nathaniel Rockerduck is the name of RKD's uncle, not nephew; Elias Coot (Casey's cousin) refers to Cornelius as his uncle, not grandfather. Some relatives are missing as well (have a look at my thread Duck family trees).

Oops! I only had Nathaniel's name to go by - placing him as a nephew was pure guesswork! I did originally have Elias as the elder Elias' son, but I moved him around for one reason or another... and then I accidentally put him as Cornelius grandson... I'll correct it!

In some of my older tree I believe I'd just place Pokerface as a son of Quagmire, but I've flip-flopped a lot myself. Much as there's nothing in the story that demands he be a McDuck rather than a Duck, I also prefer to keep the “Mc”, both because the name sounds snappier that way, and because he was (IIRC) the first-ever non-Scrooge “McDuck” ever introduced!

There's really little to no clue about where Jean-Claude fits in the family tree in his debut — he's just a one-panel mention in a half-comic, half-feature thing looking back at the history of Duckburg. However, it is stated he tried and failed to take Fort Drakeborough back from the Native Americans who'd seized the Killmule Hill stronghold by that point, so it has to predate Cornelius Coot's arrival (as seen in His Majesty McDuck's flashback) by some margin. 

I guess I see where you're coming from with DT17, but I still feel like there's a very big difference between all those “classic” Disney shows and DT17. With the former, while it would be too much to say that they are intended to “fit in the Barks canon” per se, they are just supposed to be new works featuring “the classic characters”; you're meant to go into the 1987 DuckTales, or Quack Pack, while holding your knowledge of the 1940s cartoons at least to be valid history for these characters. And, of course, the '87 DuckTales comics eventually did away with the idea that DT ‘replaced’ the Barks versions of events, with continuity references back to Barks and Rosa story. (I don't just mean Rightful Owners, either!) By contrast, DT17 is explicitly a parallel universe from everything else — some events and characters will echo or resemble pre-2017 stories, but no preexisting Duck story whatsoever is directly applicable to its universe, with the potential, still very shaky exception of Donald's cameo in A Goofy Movie (since Angones stated, after the Goofy DT17 episode aired, that Goof Troop was directly valid history for this Goofy, not "events substantially similar to Goof Troop"). 

W/ regards to the $crooge McDuck Wiki, you really ought to give it a shot; following the thread on here where there were complaints about this very problem, we've become very explicit about sourcing of such information. The opening sentence of a page whose name is speculative in some way will always read “[Name] is a logical English name for the character known in Italian as [Original Italian Name]”, and names that are directly from unlicensed sources will always be marked with the [UNOFF] citation. 

Oh, and IIRC no date is given for Pilgrim Hat Guy; 17th-century is just a guess. But I misspoke when I spoke of Seafoam — I meant Matey McDuck, of course, who as per the Chapter 0 of the L&T ended up as governor of Fort Drakeborough after surviving the shipwreck Barks originally had him dying in.
