Wow, I've never seen that Sunday page before! This Goof-kid seems to be a bit younger than the Gilbert we're familiar with nowadays, but this Sunday page could probably take place when he was younger. The only problem would be if Gilbert's age doesn't match up with Morty's. I'm not familiar enough with Morty & Ferdie and Gilbert to know what their ages should be in relation to each other.

At any rate, this Sunday page is a great find! I know it's an "if", but these relatives of Goofy are to my knowledge currently the best candidates for Gilbert's parents! Needless to say an important piece of the puzzle!

By the way, does anyone have access to a higher resolution version of the Sunday page? It would be great to really get a good look at these Goofy relatives!

The Gonzales page was published in newspapers on May the 30th, while Gilbert debuted in the comics on April the 22nd. Could Walsh have been inspired by it? That would make it the second ever appearance of Gilbert.

I don't know about difference in age between GIL and MF (I think I only read one —at least recently— story in which they appear together, and he is really unpleasant in that one), but I have always seen him as a littler kid.

Those people sitting with Goofy in the Sunday page would be the perfect couple of parents for Gilbert because the father looks like Goofy while the mother is a stranger (as it is implied in the comics).

I'd guess that THIS is Goofy's OTHER non-runaway brother, rather than Gilbert's father.  Gilbert would be building something with an erector set, or making a test with a Junior Portable Chemistry Lab on Goofy's lawn, or if riding a tricycle, it would be some kind of new-and-improved tricycle he had just invented, he would be testing.  Gilbert, even at that young age, would be bored to death simply riding a tricycle.  And comic book characters should be exaggerated to the extreme!  Gilbert should have already earned his university graduation cap (or is it a university professor's cap) at 3 years old.  So, THIS must be Goofy's 3rd brother and HIS son, Dudley "Doofus" Dawg, Jr.  THIS brother looks somewhat older than Goofy (iF that will matter, as to which brother he is assigned to be.  But, I vote for him to NOT be the Toreador, Mexico resident. 

As far as Gilbert's age vs.  Morty's and Ferdie's:  Ferdie has almost always been gone during the time Gilbert existed.  I think there was just a slight overlap in 1954 when Gilbert's first story appeared.  And I can't remember any story with both Gilbert and Morty.  But Gilbert should take after Goofy and his brothers, and be as much bigger than Morty (and Ferdy, his twin brother) as Goofy was bigger than Mickey as full grown adults.  So, when Goofy's nephews are roughly the same size as Gilbert, they must be OLDER than Gilbert.  So, IF Goofy's nephew in this strip IS Gilbert, then Morty and Ferdy MUST be older.  However, I can't believe THIS young Goof IS Gilbert, due to being entertained by merely riding a tricycle.  So, the jury is still out on who is older.  Gilbert ACTS older than Morty and Ferdy in EVERY story.  But that is because Gilbert's super intelligence forces him to behave in a more mature way, because that is being more practical, and he decides to do so because he knows that will be better for his welfare, in the long run. 

So, I think that IF no story evidence PROVES that Morty and Ferdy are older or younger than Gilbert, the difference in ages, higher or lower, within a few years, can be anything we want.  In fact, for any storywriter, it shouldn't matter, as he or she will need Gilbert to act more maturely than The Fieldmouse Twins, unless the particular story wants to dwell on Gilbert "experimenting" to see if his acting his "chronological age", will bring him lots of fun, that he has been missing all theses years (basically a one-time situation).  Based on how the 3 characters in question have been drawn by The Disney Comics artists, so far, their ages shouldn't be more than about 2 or 3 years in either direction.

Sim, can you please try to find that story containing all 3 kids, or just Gilbert and Morty, so we can all see it?  That might give a better clue to the age difference (at least in its direction).

While I admit to be rather unfamiliar with Gilbert as a character, I don't think that being a genius kid means that one cannot enjoy a bike ride. Unless this is a doctored photo, even Einstein enjoyed a bike ride once in a while. 


That being said, I hear what you're saying, Robb. But I don't think Gilbert's interests should be limited to science.

The story I was talking about is Topolino e il collegio modello (Dalmasso/Chierchini, 1961). Here, it is established that Gilbert attends an important college and only sees Goofy twice every year (on Easter and on Christmas). Mickey sends his nephews to that college and they find out that Pete and an accomplice pretend to be teaching there, Gilbert gets kidnapped and so on...

What I find weird about this story is that everyone seems to dislike Gilbert: Morty and Ferdie, the college principal, but most of all Goofy. Goofy is happy when Gilbert gets kidnapped and he pities the kidnappers because they have to bear with him. Actually, Gilbert is kind of annoying here: he keeps talking infinite and boring balloons and correcting everybody and he acts as a know-it-all.

This is a page from the story, but I don't think that the drawings could tell us much about their ages.

I'm sure that Albert Einstein enjoyed riding a bicycle.  I would have thought that without seeing this photo.  I've known many brilliant people who were normal people, who enjoyed normal pursuits.  But, as I stated above, most of my editors continuously harped on the fact that comic book characters' actions and characteristics should be exaggerated as much as possible, because in our field, we have so little room in pages and panels to make our points and leave an impression on the readers.  We are attempting to make a character identification based on ONE MEASLY PANEL, based on who we think the author and artist meant for the reader to recognise as that character.  In such a case.  If it matters at all, who that character IS, the artist HAS to draw him showing the most prominent well-known characteristics, so he will be identified as Gilbert.  If I drew a Gilbert story (and I HAVE written and drawn one), and I also wanted to show that he liked to partake in normal activities at times, too, I would do that in a story that would have enough pages to show that clearly, without compromising the room for showing his well-known characterisation, as well as not compromising the room for fitting in the story plotline in the proper pacing.  This author and artist chose to place that character in one small panel.  That basically defines him as a VERY unimportant character.  So, by definition, not having any known distinguishing characteristics of Gilbert.......  he was NOT meant to be Gilbert.  Therefore, we should NOT assume he IS Gilbert.  This has NOTHING at all to do with whether or not Gilbert does or doesn't enjoy normal children's activities.  It is an editors' rule that if you want a character to be recognised as that character, you MUST give him at least one of his distinguishing characteristics.  Looking like (Goofy Jr.) is NOT distinguishing, as there were hundreds of Goofy facsimiles, and at least several young dog-people that looked exactly like this character.  I'm not saying that this character CAN'T possibly be Gilbert.  I'm just saying that we can't use this panel as "proof" he is Gilbert.  Clearly, he wasn't intended to be Gilbert, or the author would have had him doing an activity that has been used in several, if mot most Gilbert stories, or had him wearing his normal outfit, with pasteboard graduation or professor's cap.  Have you EVER seen ANY story with Gilbert not wearing that cap?  I have not.  We should look for better evidence of Gilbert's father and mother.  Without that evidence we can use this panel, and just assume the man is Goofy's older brother.  For all we know, Gilbert may not have been born when this photo was taken, and the boy on the tricycle is the latter's elder brother.  It is not a factor on this topic, but I also don't think Gilbert's interests should be limited to science. So Gilbert is taking the Ludwig von Drake "Know-It-All" job, eh?  I do agree with you that this artist has made it impossible to tell any age difference between Gilbert and The Fieldmouse twins.  They all look like adult midgets.  Morty and Ferdie both look exactly like the 28-year old "suburban" Mickey.  And Gilbert looks 10-20 YEARS older than Goofy in 4 out of the 5 panels, and the same age as Goofy (35) in the other.  Based on ALL of the panels of Gilbert and Morty and Ferdie I've ever seen, I'd feel comfortable saying that Gilbert was about 2 years older than The Twins, based on how the faces were drawn and their height differences, and the relative relationship of The Twins' height to Mickey's and Gilberts to Goofy's.  But, I'm sure that many of us readers wouldn't have a problem with them being the same ages.

Just making this note: There really is no way to logically understand the Goofy family tree. The branches and trunks will always be, well, goofy. As discussed on this forum before, there's even one Lockman story where Mickey says that he and Goofy know nothing about Goofy's family or even his childhood! ( ) I love these genealogical threads, but we can never make perfect sense of everything. That said, if we are going to try to make a half-cohesive family tree, I think that the panel that LP posted from ZM 53-06-07 is really key. I think that it should serve as a rough guideline for discussions of Goofy siblings. Based on that image, I would say that Goofy is probably the oldest child, or, at least, the oldest son, with six younger brothers and four younger sisters (though I can't actually tell if the artist meant for the baby to be a brother or a sister). We know that three of the brothers should be Geefy (whom we know from his sole "appearance" is certainly younger than Goofy), Loony, and Gaffy (at least I think that Gaffy should be one of them; I've never read Gaffy's debut and thus don't know when in his life he was lost in the jungle), but the other three are really blank slates, with one of them probably being Gilbert's father.

If the kid in the panel that sim posted is not really Gilbert, then the adults with him don't have to be Goofy's brother and sister-in-law, either. That fellow could just be one of the many Goofy cousins. Mickey only refers to them as Goofy's "relatives." The possibilities for their placement on the family tree are nearly endless! Long live the Goofy family!

My friend, allow me introduce Exhibit B, the 2019 Paul Rudish short Outta Time. Here, Rudish's Goofy travels back in time to the age of dinosaurs and cavemen and somehow manages to cause a massive ripple effect which turns everyone in the world into goofies, including Professor Von Drake. As far as we can tell, everyone is still the same; they just look like Goofy now. Is this the birth of the timeline which contains all those '40's and '50's shorts where everyone and his mama is either Goofy or a Goofy lookalike? Indeed, in the animated version of The Goofy Adventure Story, everyone, for the most part, is a "goofy," but in Vic Lockman's comics adaptation, most past people do not look like Goofy but are instead generic dognoses. Parallel universes? And hey, Goofy has actually committed some more time travel shenanigans that may have created new alternate universes. There's an American story (cannot seem to find it on INDUCKS) where Gyro Gearloose ships Goofy off to the Old West and... leaves him there? He never comes home during the course of the comic... How many times has Goofy gone back in time and not come back? How many alternate universes have been created by Goofy's zigzags through time?

It is this one and, as you say, Goofy seems to stay in 1868.

I finally was able to watch The Goofy Adventure Story the other day and realized that there is a bunch of misinformation floating around about it online. This inspired me to make this family tree. 



Here's a list of the characters:

Generation 1:
Gilbert: Goofy's nephew (paternal or maternal not specified). First appeared in Relative Genius.

Max Goof: First appeared in Fathers Are People as George Geef's son, then in The Goofy Adventure Story as Goofy's son, and finally in Goof Troop as Max (once again, Goofy's son).


Generation 2:
Joe Dawg: The Goofy Adventure Story retcons the Goofy in For Whom the Bulls Toil as Junior’s “Uncle Joe”. In The Goofy Adventure Story, Goofy says that Uncle Joe is on Goofy and Junior’s branch of the family tree, indicating that Joe is on Goofy’s side of the family – not Junior’s mother’s. Goofy refers to Joe as “your uncle Joe” when speaking to Junior, which indicates that he is Goofy’s brother (and not Goofy’s uncle).
However, there is no concrete evidence that Joe is in fact Gilbert’s father. Both of the two candidates (Joe and Gaffy) would have to have left their family soon after Gilbert was born (Joe to Mexico and Gaffy to the jungle). However, out of the two, Joe seems the most likely to me. But there’s always the possibility that Goofy has yet another sibling who is the parent to Gilbert.

Gaffy: Goofy’s twin brother who lives in the jungle in The Quest For Tarzan.

Dippy Dawg (Goofy): Originally named Dippy Dawg but later known by his nickname “Goofy”. First appeared as an unnamed old man in Mickey's Revue, then as a young Dippy in The Whoopee Party. Dippy first appeared in the Mickey Mouse strips in Enter... Dippy Dog!.

Goofy’s wife: First appeared in Cold War as George Geef’s wife.


Generation 3:
Goofy’s mother: First appeared in the cartoon How to Be Groovy, Cool and Fly, featured in the House of Mouse episode Big Bad Wolf Daddy.

Benjamin Dawg: First appeared in the House of Mouse episode Goofy’s Menu Magic. His design resembles Dippy Dawg’s original design from Mickey’s Revue. As Dippy is not mentioned by name in Mickey’s Revue, it could feasibly be retconned into being Benjamin.
It’s mentioned in Goofy's Last Stand that he was a railroad man.
In A Goofy Movie, Goofy has a map that has been passed down from generation to generation. It originally belonged to a “Walter P. Goofey” who then gave it to a “Benjamin Goofey”. Considering that Goofy has a grandfather named Walter, it is likely that Benjamin is the name of Goofy’s father. However, as Goofy’s real surname is "Dawg", I have changed Benjamin and Walter’s names accordingly.

Amos Goofy: The Goofy Adventure Story retcons the Goofy in African Diary to being Amos Goofy. Amos is Junior’s grandfather on his mother’s side. In other words, Amos is Goofy’s wife’s father.
(This guy was the reason I sought out The Goofy Adventure Story in the first place, because the Disney Wiki says he’s Goofy’s father! But it turns out he’s not. The Wiki also says that Tiger Trouble actually happened to Amos, but this is also false. Tiger Trouble is repurposed in The Goofy Adventure Story, but it is a made up story featuring Goofy himself.)


Generation 4:
Grandma Goofy: First appeared in ZM 44-09-10. Since she is called Grandma “Goofy” and not Grandma “Dawg”, I put her as the wife of Ebenezer Goofy.

Ebenezer Goofy: First appeared in The Goofy Adventure Story. While he shares the surname with Junior’s mother, he is most definitely Goofy’s grandfather, as Goofy holds up a picture of Ebenezer and asks Junior “Notice the resemblance?” in The Goofy Adventure Story.

Walter P. Dawg: First mentioned in Goofy's Last Stand, where Goofy claims that his (presumably paternal) grandfather was Colonel Longjaw Goofy, who went to war with native Americans.
In Pippo e l'asso dei cieli, we meet Goofy’s grandfather Walter. Apparently he has the same surname as Goofy in Italian, so he would be the paternal grandfather. I guess this could be retconned into being the same character as Longjaw, with Longjaw being a nickname.


Generation 5:

Davy Pippet: First appeared in The Search for the Zodiac Stone!. Placed based on the birth of the real Davy Crockett.

Josh Dawg: First appeared in The 'Lectro Box. Goofy’s great-great-great-grandfather. Admittedly, he is never stated to be a Dawg.


Generation 9:
Lewis Goofy: First appeared on the Goofy family tree in The Goofy Adventure Story. He was alive in 1807.


Generation 10:
“Wild” Bill Goofy: The Goofy Adventure Story retcons the Goofy in Californy 'er Bust as Goofy’s ancestor “Wild” Bill Goofy.

Good analysis of Goofy's family tree. And yes, Goofy is my favorite character after Donald Duck. Although I think there are still more people to be added. I know Goofy has a younger cousin named Rex and he appeared in a Danish comic. I forgot his name, but if I find out I'll let you know.

By the way, one question, do you think Max Goof and Goofy Junior are the same person or two different people? I know it has nothing to do with the comics, but it kind of confuses me, considering that Goofy Junior appeared during the 1950s classic Goofy shorts, while Max appeared in 1992's Goof Troop. Anyway, I know it's off topic, but I kind of prefer Max Goof from Goof Troop.

Good analysis of Goofy's family tree. And yes, Goofy is my favorite character after Donald Duck. Although I think there are still more people to be added. I know Goofy has a younger cousin named Rex and he appeared in a Danish comic. I forgot his name, but if I find out I'll let you know.

By the way, one question, do you think Max Goof and Goofy Junior are the same person or two different people? I know it has nothing to do with the comics, but it kind of confuses me, considering that Goofy Junior appeared during the 1950s classic Goofy shorts, while Max appeared in 1992's Goof Troop. Anyway, I know it's off topic, but I kind of prefer Max Goof from Goof Troop.

Thank you. This tree was never meant to include every cousin, uncle, aunt, and so on. Just Goofy's closest family and his parents, their parents, and so on. I believe Gilles Maurice was trying to put together an ultimate composite Goofy family tree on the Papersera Forum, though.

In my head-canon, there is only one Goofy. George Geef is Goofy, and also, classic cartoon Goofy is comics-Goofy and also Goof Troop-Goofy. Furthermore, I consider George Geef Junior, Goofy Junior from The Goofy Adventure Story and Max from Goof Troop to be the same character. In this head-canon, Goof Troop is set in the '50s or '60s, with the '90s aspects of the show being replaced with '50s or '60s equivalents. 

However, I should note that my head-canon is irrelevant to real canon (of course, there is no real canon in Disney comics, but you hopefully know what I mean). The real answer is of course that the Max Goof from Goof Troop and the George Geef Junior from the '50s cartoons exist in separate continuities (or universes). They are different iterations of the same concept. Sometimes, these continuities overlap, and there are too many contradictions to truly make sense of it all.

Judging from Goofy's appearance in the photograph, it appears to have been taken less than 20 years before "the present", meaning that it makes sense that Gaffy is not present. Therefore, we can deduce that the two brothers in the photo are Geefy and Loony. 
The brother on the left has basically the same hairstyle as Goofy's relative from ZM 54-05-30. The woman whom I labeled his wife could easily just be a sister of Goofy's.



Of course, the ones labeled nieces and nephews might be Goofy's siblings, as TheMidgetMoose suggested. Now that I think about it, that is probably the intent, as the whole point is that Goofy grew up in a large family... and two brothers isn't too large...

Great graphic, LP! Yes, I'd think that all the kids in the portrait are Goofy's siblings, and this picture could be more than twenty years old. Goofy could be, say, 17 here, and could be in his late thirties in the present day.
