Not counting black and white cartoons, I believe this is the first time Donald is being animated with a black suit. Correct me if I'm wrong on that.
The image gives me the impression that they're trying to make this feel similar to Barks Scrooge while still putting a modern spin on it. Webby's new design also looks great and and a lot less like a child version of Daisy.

Agreed, there is a basic Barksian element to the character designs this time around that was lacking in the original series. Of course, we can't be sure how representative this one still promotional image is of what the series itself will look like, but there's an implicit dynamism that portends well for the quality of animation we can expect. The fact that this first-ever image features Donald and not Launchpad also suggests that we may see an entirely different universe here compared to the original series ... the nephews living with Donald rather than Scrooge maybe? (Although Donald wears his Navy-type hat rather than the sailor cap, and I'm not sure what exactly to make of that.) As for Webby, I never really liked her in the original series, but this Webby seems different ... less the hopelessly naive, saccharine-sweet, do-no-wrong girl scout and more the slightly older character, with more of a personality somehow, more involved with the adventure, an underlying playfulness (I understand the risks of extrapolating from a single image, but still...), which is welcome in view of the sore need for relatable and likable female characters. So overall ... I'm cautiously more-than-optimistic.

Hmm. This concept-art is interesting to me, in both good and bad ways.
THE GOOD THINGS:
— The series generally seems to have a specific design, with painted backgrounds and drawn characters, which I do appreciate.
— The kinda Daan-Jippesque expression on Donald and that on Scrooge's face are okay.
THE BAD THINGS:
— You got all excited that Donald is wearing his black suit. With his DuckTales hat. Well I'm gonna tell you what: it doesn't look remotely good. And you know why ? Because there's no blue on him. At least either the shirt or the hat must be blue; in the comics the shirt is black and the hat blue, in DuckTales the hat is black/white and the shirt blue, and in the real cartoons everything is blue. A Donald Duck who's not wearing any blue is not Donald Duck. Even Don Rosa got that right with him being referred to as "the Blue Duck" in "the Quest for Kalevala".
— Is it me, or did they age up Huey, Dewey and Louie ? Awful nightmares of "Quack Pack" are coming back to bite me. Or perhaps it means that their series is a "sequel" to the Barks comics or to the original DuckTales ? But dammit, we all know these characters don't age, unofficial-graveyard-heartbreaking-Don-Rosa-drawings notwithstanding. BAH.
— They redesigned up Webby. Re-BAH. But a bigger BAH, 'cause her WHOLE POINT was that she was a cute almost-toddler girl. If they're not going to bring THIS Webby back, they might as well create another one. Or perhaps, going with the above theory that this new season is chronologically taking place some time after the original DuckTales, this is supposed to be the same Webby we all know, but simply older. In that case, re-BAH; as I said it is her whole point to be young and cute. And even there, this version of an older Webby doesn't even remotely match the canon "aged-up Webby" we know from "Duck to the Future".
— Where is Launchpad McQuack ? Is he gone because this season would chronologically take place during "Darkwing Duck" (at a point where Launchpa would now work for Darkwing) ?
NEUTRAL NOTES:
— I kinda prefer Scrooge's blue-coat-red-handcuffs suit to the red-with-black-handcuffs one, but it is pretty minor. I'm actually rather relieved that they didn't go for the hideous Rosa version with grey handcuffs.
— I already tackled with that subject in my earlier points, but where is this season's place in the continuity ? Is it primarily in continuity with the previous seasons of DuckTales ? Is it primarily a sequel to the Barks/Rosa continuity, but adding DuckTales concepts to the mix in an "Ultimate Universe" fashion ? Is it an entirely new, alternate continuity to both the show and the comics ?
— Will the new Darkwing Duck comics follow this new series's continuity and designs should they reference DuckTales, or will they stick with the original DuckTales from which their Launchpad McQuack and Gizmoduck are from ? For that matter, will Gizmoduck be in this season ? Will Bubba ?

If you say so. But the 2017 Darkwing Duck comics are also referred to as reboots, even though it's clear they'll be in continuity with the last run of comics.
Also, whatever if they don't intend it to be in-continuity. I LIKE continuity. I consider the original DuckTales to be in continuity with the comics in spite of the few bits that don't fit perfectly, and I found solutions to these bits. So I'm also sorta wondering what solutions I'll find to their new inconsistencies, should they bring about any.
Can you source me where the Joe Books Darkwing comics are referred to as a reboot? I've seen that term used nowhere in relation to it, at least not in terms of continuity, just that the crossover with Ducktales is non-canon.
I’m also hoping the fact that Donald is part of the first released image means he’s going to have a larger role in the new series. It does look like they are on a “mission” and he is part of it.
But did Webby start wearing glasses? Did she ever do that in the old series?
About the Darkwing Duck confusion – there was a false rumor going around about a rebooted Darkwing Duck animated series. But there’s been no official information about that. The new Darkwing Duck comics from Joe Books are coming late next month, not in 2017. And they are not rebooting anything. Aaron Sparrow said on another forum that the new license included the DuckTales characters too, so a comic crossover could happen in the future if Disney approved the story (the last one apparenly wasn't).
I'm pretty happy with this picture, for what it's worth. Yes, HDL look a little older to me than they did in DuckTales, but not older than they sometimes seem by their actions in the comics. If that's Webby, she does indeed look older and different (yup, I at first thought she was wearing glasses, too)--and I'm fine with that. Webby sometimes came off well in the first series, but I'd be happy to have her character reworked so she's not quite so young, innocent, sweet, and cute. Gosalyn was *so* much better a character!
I'm also happy that Dewey is consulting the Guidebook and not a smartphone. Now, if only Magica De Spell turns out to have a slight *Italian* accent....
My real worry is how I'm ever going to see this new iteration of DuckTales, since I don't even have a cable hook-up of any kind!
I do hope that the coming of the new DuckTales spurs the Corporate Mouse to release the remaining episodes of the original DuckTales on DVD. I want Ducky Mountain High! And Trala La!
