The "brand new character" qualifier also rules out Neighbor Jones, Grandma and Donald's parents (in flashback and not just pictures on Webby's bulletin board), all of whom I still hope we'll see eventually (Jones seems the least likely of the lot since Donald doesn't live next door to him in this show; he'd have to antagonize him in some other capacity).

BTW, weren't we told that Fergus was supposed to appear in the Gladstone episode ... were the scenes cut?

What's the point of bringing NEIGHBOUR Jones into this series if he's NOT going to be Donald's neighbour?  Are they going to give him the back story of having lived next to Donald, when Donald lived in his house together with his nephews, before he moved his houseboat to The McDuck Mansion?  Or, will they say that Jones lived in a house near the river where Donald docked his houseboat?

I am interested in the prononciation of Fethry Duck, but I don't even get the difference between all the "th" sounds you guys are talking about.

Let's do it simple: I just wrote "Fethry Duck" on google translate. Can you hear the lady voice pronouncing it by pushing the little audio icon on that page, please? Do you confirm that this is the way you North Americans would pronounce it?

The lady says it as I would: "FEFRI" (honestly my hear cannot really distinguish those two F's).

What on Earth are you talking about? Look, I'll list the different things I can hear:

The sound "f". Like in fame and feather.

The "warm" sound "th" as in the, though or with. I think it's what the others call the "soft th". 

The "harsh" sound "th", as in thump, moth, maths, orthograph.

The question is whether the "th" in Fethry should be pronounced warm (like in Feathery) or harsh (like in bath). I don't see how anybody could pronounce any "th" as "f".

EDIT: no wait, based on your examples I can hear the difference between F and harsh TH. But not in the Fethry pronounced by that voice.

If not to your ear, then to your tongue, surely? The "harsh" TH is pronounced with your tongue to your front teeth, much unlike any F.

I clicked on your link to reach the French language page of Google Translate.  The woman sounding the word pronounces it as Feth-ry, with a somewhat harsh Eth sound, but weaker than it should be (e.g. something between the Thorn and Eth).  But, it had no "er" syllable, indicating that they do not think that that word should sound like English "feather".  But, then I went to the English page of google Translate.  THAT page has the American speaker sounding it about exactly HALF way between the soft Thorn pronunciation, and the harsh (hard) Eth pronunciation.  But, she also added th"er" syllable.  So, The Americans clearly think that name is derived from the word "feather", and should be pronounced: "feathery".

On the other side, now that I try it in my mind, I like the name more with the warm 'th', which for an Italian sounds almost like "FED-RI".

The French speaker does NOT pronounce "Fethry" the way it was intended to be pronounced by the English-speaking writer who invented the name.  The American English speaker, on the English language Google Translate page, says the name closer to what was intended, but unfortunately for us fans who want to distinguish between the soft and harsh "th" sound, placed it exactly half way between those two sounds, as represented by the 2 different Old English "th" sound characters (letters). I still contend that it should be a derivative of English "feather", and use the soft "feather" (Thorn) sound, and NOT add the extra "er" syllable.

Yes thanks! Yes, the origin of the name Fethry could be a joke on the word "Feathery". That closes the case for me.

Many (if not most) native English speakers don't realise that the "th" sound does not exist in many languages around The World.  It does not exist in French or Italian, or Dutch  or German, for that matter.  I have yet to hear a Dutchman (who didn't start learning English from birth) pronounce either the Thorn (soft) or Eth (harsh) sound correctly.  Even the best pronounce a hard "t", and ad a little thickness, trying to imitate The proper English pronunciation. That is a similar situation to American english speakers trying to reproduce the Scandinavian and Dutch oe or French eu or German ue sounds with rounded lips but spoken from far back in the throat, or making the extremely harsh, gutteral sounds that don't exist in English other than clearing the throat of phlegm (e.g. "yeccchhhh!).  In Dutch, there is a harsher form as in "misschien", and a softer form, as in "nog".  Those 2 sounds are analagous to the 2 English "th" sounds in degree of difference, but for a very different sound.  English speakers would find it impossible to spell those sounds using the English Alphabet.  And, they could easily "misspell" that more drastically than "Fethry" to "Fevvri".

I can understand it being heard as "Fevvri" to French or Italian ears.  They are not used to connecting spelling to the "th" combination sound.  I was raised hearing both Dutch and English from birth.  So, I can make the English "th" sounds as a native.

This is the way I pronounce it (minus the stilted nature of the computer voice, of course). I understand that "Fethry" is probably derived from "feather", and I'm unsure why Dick Kinney (assuming he named the character) didn't simply call him "Feathery" or even "Feathry", but since he chose to give him a name that was exotically spelled, I guess I like to make it exotic-sounding, too. Also, as Matilda pointed out, a lot of proper names have the hard "th" in them (Catherine, Luther, Arthur), and the soft "th" would sound strange.

The American version of Google Translate does indeed make it sound closer to "feathery". Press the audio icon a second time, and the voice makes it sound even closer to the word (and seems annoyed doing it!).

I agree he can't really be "Neighbor Jones" anymore, but maybe an old classmate or coworker of Donald's or some such, as a nod to comics fans? If they can repackage Gyro as head of McDuck R&D instead of an independent contractor, they can surely do something like that with Jones (true, it won't be the Jones we know and love, but this show has already strayed too far from the comics-verse for that to matter much).
